I cant resist putting my opinion in here, in the example thread you mentioned it was in fact the inappropriate comments of a 'Mod' that began the whole problem, he did i beleive realise the error of his ways and that is all that is needed - problem arrises, some one point sit out, apology from person who made he mistake, and we all move on.

If the problem persists then yes by all means delete threads etc.

I see no wrong in the odd heated debate, it has an element of the 'dialectic' in it, in that someome puts forward an idea and then we all agree or disagree and reach a group conclusion.

I think the peoblems occur when people jump in without having read the whole thread with opinions that simply muddy the water further. when things break down to this level, with silly statments flying, then perhaps yes delete the lot.

if there are particular areas that seem to cause problems, then why not find a moderator or 'advisor to the oderators on that topic' who's opinion can be sought to clear up the problem?

In this case it was the issue of race / racism, and this is often a problem area, so why not get some one to 'advise' if not moderate in this field? some one who's area of expertise lie in that area?

all just food for thought!

as for the some of mods the members can do a better job of policing this site and it would be nice to hear from all mods views on this so we all can see where we all stand on this to which i doubt they will
Personally yes I agree.

Posts should be put in the relevant forum, its just lazy and discourteous to do otherwise, sometimes its not aways obvious which of 2 that might be and thats fair enough but of late the "I'm new here be gentle" forum has been being used as a general question area, thats not what its for its for people to introduce themselves and be made welcome. So if you're unsure post in one of the choices, it can always be moved later, bt at least make the effort to try. Perhaps a note as is often seen on forums, along the lines of - "sorry if this is the wrong place, wasn't sure were to put it, if wrong pls fel free to move".

I also agree if you have a question by all means ask it, I don't think its oo much to ask for you to have a quick look and see if you can find the answer yourself but I know full well what it can be like looking through old post trying to find answers - even when you know they are there.

So assuming you have had a quick look, can't find an answer, so you start a new thread and ask your question. People should either answer it if they can or link you to where the answer can be found if they know where that is - to simply say this has been asked loads of times is without providing some form of answer or help is just discourteous.

If later on a mod comes along and decides that the new question and the old thread would actually be better off combined into one thread, to keep all the info together, this can be done quite easily. Doesn't happen very often but perhaps it should.

I must say guys I look in the search thing often and can never find what I want Even when I know I've read it before
Maybe there is an easier way to search AND find stuff.
Not fussed but just an observation

I dont think the issue is a thread going off topic now and then . Developing a discussion from oil filter micron capability through to whats the most painful sunburn youve ever had is all part of a group of people having an animated conversation. It happens

Where potential problems lurk is in the area of inappropriate comments and behaviour.

Essentially if someone asks a question and another poster tells them to piss off, do we accept that as the rough and tumble or do we deem it inappropriate ?

Thats an extreme example to make a point. A lot of what I've seen on here is more subtle.

no i don't think you understand its not a moderator job to have an opinion on the site. it is what it is and the rules of the club are clear

as a member i like it as it is,
i do have an opinion and will air it as everyone knows, but i think you need two hats to mod..... as i think they do very well.

the mods are still members and still should be treated as such. for example my opinion is no greater than someone else s , just cos im green that don't make me right...

if / when i have to moderate something i do it clearly and pm the person/persons involved , as i have on occasions. but that's it for modding. its just a i have time to put into watching the site to make sure everyone is happy and safe. a point of contact if you need something or unhappy with something

but im still a member same as you or anyone else. im going to have diferant views but everyone is allowed their say

i think bat said it best earlier about big fish in a small pond... well not anymore, everyone is equal

My view, for what its worth, which ain't a lot, is that the general consensus seems to be that most people are happy with the relaxed style of the site....when all's said and done I don't actually think anyone goes away not having found what what they were looking for, and yes, probably a good idea to make sure tech posts are put in the right sections.

Other than that, the ideal thing would be a single point of contact in case anyone wants to alert a mod to an inappropriate thread or behaviour so that it can be dealt with as necessary. Given that most of the mods have busy lives it would make sense for them all to have the ability to act on, say, a racist or otherwise unpleasant thread and have some central point that they can all monitor as and when they have time, where people can log their concerns.

That place ought to be out of sight to other members, so that people can feel free to voice their concerns without fear of criticism, and giving all mods the same power would ensure that someone would be along fairly soon on any given day to check the log and act.

even given my limited experience and available tools, i think its still possible to act on the slight problems that might and sometimes do occur. like the ones mentioned above. im often contacted by members for all sorts of reasons, from membership to inappropriate posts to more serious problems . but if im contacted or i see something... its acted on

as some of you already know

anyway i dont need to name names the things i have done the people concerned know anyway. and the ones who dont know, obviously have not asked me for help, advise and stuff.

would it be possible to get a list of things that have caused general offence / upset in the past, so we can work towards what people should keep an eye out for? add the subject matter that you have seen to cause problems or offence to the list (or not this probably wont work)

obvious first one:

race/racism
