As it is the Wife's Motor this train of thought is a tricky one to navigate. I have always ruled out anything like a Range Rover / Disco/Money Pit.

I might have to swallow the crazy increase in VED for post March 2006 Diesel Power as the latest generation 4x4's are outside our present budget of up to £8k.

I know a later Grand Cherokee & a Patrol would fit the bill in terms of required size, Jeeps seem easy to find with under 70k miles on the clock.

I was not mad about our old Santa Fe as everything seemed to start leaking oil as it was out of the long warranty. A neighbour has nice looking a Kia Sportage but TBH we prefer the bigger Sorento.

Replacement would have to fit three initial essential criteria.

1) Be an Automatic.

2) Have under 70k miles on clock.

3) Not be LPG powered.

What do our family here suggest I look at - hopefully we will get another 2-3 years out of the WJ ?
Have you thought about a BMW X5?

BMW X5 is a tricky one. Why is such an expensive car when new now so cheap. I do know they have the odd problem and can be very expensive to repair. Same as he Porsche Cayenne

Oh and sorry to the OP if I've kind of hi-jacked this thread, it was just right timing of the question for me too.

If you want me out of this please let me know and I'll start a thread for my search

Have been considering in the far future, did you know the emissions must
be better as even 07 plates are only 300 or so quid.

my thought was x5 as road and caravan tug and proper off roader as toy.

some of those 3.0td churn out some mega power, drove a newish one when were
new and seemed good, had ride in one recently and nice n comfy family wagon.

seen as sav? not suv but wonder apart from lack of low box if could be set up for
mild off roading.

I did hear something recently about future emissions tests... The future looks bleak for Diesel Power!

TBH no a friend ran an X5 (bought new) in fact he replaced it 3 times with another X5 then fell out with the later 7 speed auto box version. Although I was only a passenger it was very fast and felt sure footed. He replaced X5 with a Nissan Navara now has a new Transit.

It's a poor reason but I don't like the image of BMW drivers (lol I do have a 325i) they can be expensive to run in the tyre department but not sure if they are a good used buy in the price bracket I am looking at ideally £5-6k. Whatever I buy the VEL duty at over £500 is very off putting hence why I hope the Jeep last a few more years trouble free.

I remember you buying tyres for the beemer!
I like the look of the 3 series estates but there is an image problem still for sure.

I mentioned rav4 earlier, my auntie has one, she bought it from her son who bought it brand new, I think it is a 54 plate and has only ever had ONE problem, it had a running issue but I think that was more to do with my aunties driving style really, shes a bit steady and I think it just needed some fuel additive running through it. I have been a passenger in it to France and back and its very comfortable, economical and more than fast enough, rav4 reputation is brilliant and I have always been impressed with them from my days working in the used motor trade, they sold very very fast and were hard to get hold of, even the older shape. They are supposed to be quite capable off road but I've only ever driven them on road, they are quite an impressive machine really

scanning those X5s, boy some of those v8s make some ponies, entry is a 4.4 but
seen a 4.6 and a 4.8 that makes 360bhp, perhaps an lpg conversion.....

always been anti beemer, with the salesman rep association and whilst not off roaders
gather they've raced to Dakar, hey and £200 a year less rtf towards the tyres lol.
