Sorry George, can I just ask a few questions please?

How do you set the pot up for best performance? Is it trial and error, or is there a procedure?

Is it worth mounting the pot on the Dash, so you can wind it up or down, as and when needed, or is it best in a box under the bonnet, so once setup you just leave it alone?

You say across pin 2 and 3, is this connector down on the fuel pump, or one of the ones up on the top of the engine?

Thanks.

Tdoug mounted his box on the dashboard. He then plays with his knob as he pleases, that sounds wrong some how. He adjusts it on the fly, got to say it seemed to chuck out a lot of black smoke at times though.

For what it’s worth I didn’t get the impression anyone had been particularly negative or derogatory. Still water under bridge, moved on now.

Hiya mate, I can answer at least one of those for you, wires on top of engine, and also I have mine stuck to a blank switch plate next to the central locking unlock button next to steering wheel.
I think I'm doing some underfloor heating tomorrow but not sure how much, if I get time and if you like I will post some pics of wiring and controller!

The smoke is a bonus feature when turned right up great deterrent for tailgaters whack it up and foot down for smoke then turn it back down to normal

Yeh like you said Jim, it's nowt to lose sleep over

I'm not knocking the method or saying it can't be done, I just believe in applying a bit of thought and logic to things before jumping into the unknown.

Yes you'll probably see 30BHP increase in performance, but would others have neccasarily thought about the possible legalities of it in terms of insurance for instance?

Given the OP's attitude towards the deconstruction of the "tuning boxes" he was trying to sell, I'd fear fitting said device to my vehicle without fully understanding what it does, and how it works at a component level.

Were said boxes manufactured by someone that knew about electronics at all? Are the devices CE stamped to comply with automotive electronic standards? Highly doubtful to all of the above I guess.

I'm just fussier than your next guy and maybe such interrogation raised the question as to whether I was just trying to rip the box off and start making my own for profit?

Who knows, who cares, end of the day I just want to look out for my fellow forum members and friends.
Not to make light of your concerns, but a Pot (potentiometer) is not really electronics, it's just a variable resistor, which is a passive device. The only issue I can see, is personally, I would probably use a 470ohm resistor in series with a 470ohm Pot, and then put those two components across the two wire, so that even when you wind the pot right down to 0ohm, you can not put a dead short across the wires. This would just be a safety thing for me, as I do not know what the detrimental effects of actually shorting those pins out would be on the ECU.

As for the CE marks and legalities, while again it is a valid concern, this mod is not worse than most other modifications made to these cars. I very much doubt there is a CE mark on, Ray's MAF amp, none of the home made snorkels, roof racks, roof tents, roll out blinds, storage drawers, body lifts, uprated suspension components, winch bumpers, and even most winches.

I think as a Forum Mod, you would be better just adding a Caveat, "Please do not make this modification if you do not know what you are doing, or are not willing to potentially deal with the damage that could be caused to your cars electronic components by making this unsanctioned modification. Please also be aware that modifications such as this could invalidate your warrantee, and insurance. If in doubt, please contact a qualified auto electrician, and your insurance company before trying this modification!"

Otherwise, have fun, and if you are brave enough, let us know how you get on.. Ohhh and to paraphrase Zippy, don't forget the pictures!!!

Yes please.... not sure if I will try it, or not, but there are times when towing the caravan I could do with a little more grunt... In all the time I have had it, my car has never put out any black smoke, even on the Welsh hills with the caravan on the back.

No probs.
The more I turn it the more smoke it makes, if I leave it at a reasonable setting, which I did but have it a little higher now, I don't notice any smoke. I have it set a tad higher now and notice some smoke on initial acceleration, but it does go faster so it must be burning extra fuel and not just throwing it out the back. The best way to get tailgaters is to slow down and if possible change up a gear to make the engine labour a bit at low revs, then turn the knob and boot it this doesn't work well on motorways though as the revs are too high and the fuel gets burnt instead of turning to smoke!

Sorry have not been following this completely but agree with Clive's point about the 470 ohm resistor, haste to say does not apply to my manual pumped Patrol and the Mrs would not let me play with her T2, Rick

If any one wants installation instructions then please leave your email and I will forward them to you

I personally ran one for 25k turned up as much as my clutch would take and had no issue... it's a big mod in the vw scene just we use a different pin out on the ecu

Before these where offered to sale it was run past the electricians and instrument techs at my work!!

One box was run on a dyno in Australia at a diesel tuning shop!! These are where my figures are from! The shop where very impressed as they mainly deal with big Cummins ect

At the end of the day it's down to the individual, when I first posted here I was told it couldn't be done... well it can and if you want some more power then knock yourself out..

Hi if you drop me your email I can send you pics where to wire into

I recommend cab mounted

It is to some extent trial and error to suit each truck and driver... I recommend dialing it down until idle turns lumpy or picks up then knock it back a touch, 9 times out of 10 this will want slight adjustmen after a few miles

On my personal trucks I tend to run one set at a happy medium for every day then install a second one on a switch for full power/smoke

Cheers
