is it 24v and if so when you charge it with standard charger should it be one battery at time?

Hello Jace,
No, its 12 volt and yes i did charge one at a time as i only have one charger. Do you know why a vehicle should have 2 battery’s and does it only start drawing from one battery? would I only take power from one battery?. Mav. |

not from here this is my spiritual home and ive learnt how to behave on here lol to give it bitove extra oomph for starting could you not use jump leads from battery to battery whilst tapping relays trying to persuade them to switch can you get to short starter by pasing ign switch-rules that prob out either way

Patrol starting problem.
Just been out side again to have a look under the bonnet.
Just tried linking positive feed to the solenoid direct from the battery which i understand should turn the starter motor, But it did not so may be it is the starter then!. Next thing is a tow start it to see if it is jammed, and to see if it will start on its own the next time. Mav. |

Hello Paul332, Just towed it and it started no probs, So i do think that it is the starter motor, Looks the same as the 2.7,
So just going to take it off and have a look, Back soon. Mav. |

Hello again,
Just come back in after taking Patrol one off, looks similar but three mounting holes and the 2.7 starter has only two, Never mind. Mav. |

be carefull, dont hit the starter to hard with a hammer, most are lined with a large magnet that is very brittle! It can be done a tap on the solenoid not the starter, well not to hard on the starter anyway!
try disconeecting the positive lead, put an ammeter (multi meter on amps setting) between the lead and the battery and see if it is drawing current when everything is urned off! If it is there is you problem just need to illiminate the possibilities by removing fuses, relays etc one by one until the current drain is gone. its a good place to start anyway! |

Now you have the starter off Mav you can try and see where the problem lies either solenoid or motor.
Its best to place the starter in a vice, as they do tend to jump around a bit on the floor. With a pair of Jump leads and a good battery, attach the negative lead to the starter motor body such as the flange where it bolts on to the engine, and connect the other end of the jump lead to the negative battery terminal. The positive lead should then be placed on to the large connection where the battery cable attaches to the solenoid and the other end on to the positive battery terminal. With a piece of wire or the like short from the positive connection on the starter to the small solenoid connection on the starter this should throw the pinion out and turn the starter. If there is no joy with the solenoid working the starter, then you can short across the two large connections the one your jump lead is on and the other large connection next to it, this should be done with a spanner or screwdriver or the like as a piece of wire will melt and burn your hands, you should have a few sparks and then the motor should spin up. If there is no joy and the motor does not turn then there is a problem with the motor if it does spin up then it is just the solenoid at fault. No sparks and no motor spinning suggest a problem with the brushes, lots of sparks and no motor spinning suggest a short in the windings of the motor. |

Thanks Toolbox.
I will check this out tomorrow night after work. I did connect it to a battery after i removed it, Via jump leads, and nothing happened, But after your post i will make sure i did it properly before spending £100 plus. Mav. |
