Well things are looking up.....

Holding water, so head gasket seems OK...the guy who MOT'd it spent an hour with me showing me what he'd tested and found (or not) so happy about most things, except it was still stalling - not good for a kids first car!

But tonight I picked the little darling up from work for a lesson and got there early, so had a fiddle under the bonnet and think I've cured it.

Theres a long and very convoluted rubber pipe with quick-release ends, one end attached to a pipe on the l/h side of the rocker cover, and the other going down into something mounted underneath and behind the l/h side headlight, so not very visible, but it has two electrical connections as well...I established that without the pipe, when you revved the engine the revs stayed high for quite a while before falling off again...after blowing through the pipe and replacing it the car ran perfectly for the next hour, but the problem started to creep back....it seems the pipe has 2-3 points where its tended to kink, plus the rubber is not in great nick, so I reckon its compressing at times under vacuum...have to source a new pipe tomorrow but wondered if anyone knew what the hell it was?

Probably bleedin obvious if I think about it - but its a Reno, I can't be bovvered!!!
