Dan , I fitted a K&N cone, as said before if you want to go deeper than the std filter use a snorkel.

I reckon the K&N actually takes in air higher up than the old plastic tube that feeds into the std item anyway

I've got Hiclones & K&N on the induction ide, 91 000 on the clock and return 25 - 30 mpg (carefully measured......I'm tight ) depending on how I've been driving.

If you can get hold of some during the warmer months use vege oil in with the diesel. Veggie oil = 70p per litre, diesel around (or just over) £1 = near as damn it 30% saving in fuel costs.

You'll have fun

so i can use the bio oil straight away, no conversion just fill it up and away i go? what sort of k&n is it the 57i or is there a terrano specific?

yep its the 57i kit. fitted two on my trucks, pre and post 2000 facelift.

Mine is a 2002 2.7tdi and yes thats the case. I understand theres different fuel pumps etc that handle it differently, I did the research but I'm sorry i cant remember specifics I suspect yours will be.

I'm looking for someone in our area doing filtered used oil aka waste veg oil (wvo) that seems to clock in around 40 to 50p a litre if you buy about 100 litres of it. The reason for its cheapness seems to be that theres a lot of it about, not many trucks like ours that can run on it neat and only a finite demand for turing it into biodiesel which is its main anticapted use.

On a slight aside I havent tried bio diesel yet. We've had problems at work with fleet vehicles and bio diesel. I understand some problems are alleged to be caused by the chemical content in it reacting with seals etc as opposed to the more inert nature of "normal" diesel. I really dont know though.

If you get pulled over, especially by the revenue, wouldn't you get nobbled for not having paid duty as its straight off-the-shelf veggie oil (thought duty was payable on anything if being used as vehicle fuel?)?

Good point but no

You can use 2500 litres pa as a road fuel without paying any duty. @ 25 mpg that gives you in excess of 13 500 miles tax free fuel use

When you then consider I do around 16 000 pa in the terrano , I mix with diesel or use pure diesel during the winter months (approx 1/4 of the year), I'm on a roll

On the practical side, HMRC are responsible for enforcement, they dont dip for veggie oil as they do red diesel and have no plans to.

The onus is on them if they desired to check , to prove guilt, not you prove your innocence and to my mind that makes prosecuting bloody difficult to put it mildly and against a private motorist probably not at all cost effective.

Amongst other obstacles for them is the fact the legislation doesn't even state when the calendar for your year of usage starts starts for the private motorist

I strongly suspect the people they would go after would be someone like a transport company if they realised (via tip off or smell ) that they were running several large vehicles on veg oil they would go in and prove the fleet at that time was using the stuff, but even then hard work.

Quick disclaimer here.................the views re detection problems are mine and not official, I'm not advocating anyone stuffs the system aand my vehicle is definitely on the legal side of svo/wvo use

I'm desperately searching for the document published by HMRC which contains the info I've commented and cant find it but I can assure any doubters I confirmed all of this "straight from the horses mouth" so to speak.

Mind you, in an effort to cultivate a better class of 4x4 colleagues I'm minded to try mine on extra virgin olive oil so in a traffic jam if i'm hungry I can nip out and dip me ciabatta up the exhaust for a little taste sensation! LMAO!

at least it'll get the punters oggling!
