one way to pin it down a little if you can.

long metal bar,

rest one end around the engine, the other very close to your ear.. as you move it around you'll get a very good idea where the noise is coming from.. it works GREAT..

but dont get it close to moveing parts on the out side as could poke the car into your ear.. OCH!

yep checked it-on max line, however the previous owner over-filled it by a good litre, im guessing he was over filling it to compensate for the oil loss in turbo-(TW*T).
but like i say it has been running fine and ran fine for the 30miles to mot station so baffles me!

hi i'm in the trade, and i do believe piston slap occurs more when its cold opposed to when it's hot. obviously everything expands under heat which minimizes any piston slap.
i cant say what its like when it's cold yet as the problem occured when it was at normal running temperature. i'm off out this morning to investigate further in to the problem.

hi going back to that, i would think piston slap would occur over a long period of time, where as this happened instantly as if something broke. you see i was on the way back from mot station was doing 60mph, and had done 10miles trouble free prior to this.(it's 30 miles to mot station each way) it got there fine, and almost halfway back before anything happened.

don't know how complex the oilways are on this engine, but it could be just, say, one tappet or component starved of oil because of a blockage which might not be sufficient to affect overall pressure/circulation - did'nt leave your toolbox in there when you fitted the turbo did you?

hi guys, the engine is now dead, barely turns over, so im guessing something siezing up, may well have been blocked oil ways originally, but whatever it is, it's certainly killed it now.
cheers for everyones interest.
this one was obviously a bad one!!!
