Yes. Giving up your Saturday to help someone in this manner is a very selfless thing to do, and I stand in admiration of you.

I am really impressed on the generosity of the members of this site to their fellow members.
Many of whom have never met each other. A local member even volunteered to remove a fuel tank for me from a scrapper local to him. I didn't take up the offer as I had a couple to look at. This was a genuine offer. Where as some members can help with hands on help, thanks must also go to those members who take time out to take photographs of their repairs, and those that spend time looking up information from both digital manuals and paper copies and providing this information for all to see. Thanks too to all those that troll through older posts and refer and provide links to those. It all takes time and is appreciated by all the members. I am not naming any names, as most members on this site have made a major contributions in this way. To name a few would mean missing out all the others who have made similar contributions. This is another example of what makes this club great. The main thing is... It's members. Best regards, Richard (Rustic)

Update
Hi Guy's just an update. Larson has worked like a trooper today, he's got the NS Inner Sill near the seatbelt mount sorted.
Here's the but and it is a big but, the front of the inner sills at both sides is badly rusted out. It's where the A Posts and everything come together. As you poke around with fingers the holes were just getting bigger and bigger. Poor Larson had to go so we couldn't touch these but we think that it's coming to the end of the road with the car now. I personally now think that the garage repair bill will out weigh what the car is worth now and that is if they'll repair such extreme damage. So my dilemma is should I chuck it in PX as soon as possible but money is tight or should I hope the garage can repair for us but it'll still need to go. Thing is that it has private plates on that I want to keep and it's cheaper and easier to swop car to car rather than pay the retention fee which os more than changing from car to car. Due to this it's easier to buy from a dealer and I hate selling privately. What's your thoughts? By the way I'm extremely grateful to Larson he's a top bloke. |

dunno mate. tricky. You could have it fixed but over a longer period of time i.e. let the MOT pass - that's IF Martin can finish the welding. If not, then the garage bill will certainly be extensive if the metal is that bad where you showed me. Its all about how awkward it is to weld, and if its worth it.
Problem is, as it is you cant realistically get a decent part x without declaring the problem (because of the MOT failure sheet), but then again a garage doing a part x might not have any problem doing the welding themselves to sell it on. Personally, I think its time to move on mate. I had to make the same decision. Yeah, I could have had mine welded....but then I couldn't afford it and potentially would have had yet more to do in the near future-which is the same position you are in now. have a think, but be positive. If you do partx it or sell it on, then you are on the market to get something new. |

Well the way I look at it clivvy is that PX it's worth bugger all with an MOT or without. I'm pretty certain that if the garage will repair the rust then with the other bits it'll be a £500 bill I'm sure. £500 will go a long way towards something else. A garage will only give a couple of hundred at best for a 17 year old car I would of thought. As I've explained to Mrs is that in my opinion if we were involved in an accident at motorway speeds the car would simply split open and I can't allow that to happen.

yup, as ever its just bad timing and money mate. I reckon you should start thinking about a partx or something. If you got the car fully welded up and good, then how much is the car worth then? hard to say, probably £1500 maybe?

Well I reckon £1500 is a bit optimistic, I can't do much tomorrow so will probably take it down to the garage and see how much they say and take it from there.
Can't replace it in a hurry as such yet, that'll depend upon Mrs and money. All I know is that it would break my heart to break it though I know that'll happen by someone else. Had the car 11 years. |

thing is, you may be forced into getting rid. If you get the work done, itll cost, but then you have a part x candidate or sell it. If you cant afford the work, then its just going to sit there and you wont be able to drive it, in which case you can sell or break for spares!

I can afford to fix it that's not the problem. It's being able to lay my hands on enough cash for a replacement at the moment. Wifes way of thinking is to get it fixed and px next spring time. Time to sleep will worry about it another day me thinks.
Larson did a cracking job on the centre section of the inner sill though but took a lot longer than we were expecting. It would be a real shame to waste that I have to say. |
