he's lost me there, GPU is Graphics Processing Unit....WEP cracking certainly uses CPU, how else would it monitor packets of the target wireless access point to then begin the process of cracking the WEP key?
my software runs via linux in RAM, so doesnt use the GPU other than to display what I need to see. Confused.com./ also, these days, most WEP keys are 128bit-this takes far longer than 10-15 mins to crack, purely because of the amount of packets required. I havent had to do this for about a year, so im going to go away and crack my own test lab wireless environment. I be back. |

I seem to have inadvertantly ruffled a few feathers, but with a look on google at cracking passwords you may find I am not far away from fact. The hardcore Blackhats are mostly crime oriented and work in eastern Europe.
But again WEP is a dead duck for security on wifi,WPA is more secure, longer passwords the better at least 20 characters. AES is the dog's b******* but most of us don't have use of a radius server. This is WPA-801.2x Even using linux is not entirley safe on the web as Wirenet trojan will nick your passwords. We are mere players on the web, Blackhats are evil bastards. David. |

i think the answer here really is, the regular chaps among us wont be cracking no WEP key, it just simply isnt that simple unless you are able to learn how to use the various software tools required (Aircrack-ng, wireshark, commview etc etc etc) and use that data to crack a key. the time it takes is also a factor, quite simply you have to be adept with the software if you want to crack someones WEp key, but most people just dont use them (although scanning my neighbours now i found one using WEP, so I had a quick look at their packets-can see they are using an iPhone lol).
The USB pen on ebay just has a ton of the software, which is all well and good-its USING that software thats the problem! also, its illegal I believe, hacking anybodies network without their permission? so just be careful, if you try to hack, you too can be hacked! all good fun. p.s. no feathers ruffled here at all, its complex but interesting topic! |

yes, there is hardware, but its not cheap compared to free software, and STILL requires a level of knowledge to use. Again, cracking wep in linux 10 mins or not still requires a novice to learn how to use it in the first place.

moved thread to pub, as not a newbee question or poster, Plank?
guys please note that hacking, or obtaining someone else's wifi whether locked or open without permission is illegal, folks have been prosecuted recently, even where the network was open and in effect the owner was also responsible for ease of access.

my mate has one and it pretty much is. WEP is easy, WPA takes longer and you need to use a dictionary (google it).
