Caravan Carpet Cleaning, help needed

You should of just listend to me to start with, . I used to work in a car body shop and im used to cleaning crap off of things. Brake cleaner is one of the best as it evaporates at such a low temp it dont get time to do any damage if your quick with it. Petrol will disolve the glue in the carpet holding the pile together, so if you used that, get ready to buy a new carpet soon. and the stuff they sell at the caravan shop is next to crap, as it has to be user friendly.
Anyway, glad you got it sorted, even if it is a caravan

To remove the unwanted smell, get a bucket of Hot water (Steaming, out of ketel) and add lemon juice, let the steam fill the van then vent it out. It should get rid of most of the nastyness.

you are absolutely right! I overlooked your post until I re-read the thread, but if I did it again I would go straight for the brake cleaner

I used it in a pump up spray bottle, scrubbed it in with a dry nail brush then wet vac to remove it. I hoovered half a bucket of water into the vac first and stood it outside in case of accidents!

The petrol did nothing at all, wouldn't even penetrate the glue! And the glue and tar remover stinks

so a top tip fro Kamsin tried and tested by me, going to fumigate with lemon now, having already used a litre to wet vac the carpet again

but the smell is almost gone

Why not glue carpet tiles over the original carpet?

Reminds me of the song, " there's a hole in my bucket..."


You could always remove the carpet and replace with new, or use carpet tiles, or sleep in a vapour mask...

have done the lemon juice fumigation and it seems to be fine, it doesn't even smell of lemons! Kamsin is a star

I was hoping to preserve the original carpet as it is a fairly valuable caravan (about £8k) and so far so good - what a brilliant club this is
