I agree with kebkl.I had a 406 2l hdi as well and if I was carefull got 55/60 mpg on run.Never less than 40mpg in town. When a replaced the xhaust with a Powerflo it pulled like a train and gave me a regular 55mpg.Comfy too.

The missus runs a little 1.3ltr V-Reg corolla. She does 500+ miles a week and it's never broken down once and I worked out the other day it was returning 55-60 on her daily commute!

Whilst a mini is out of it for mega miles and a jag out of it for economy why dont you approach this slightly differently as economy cars will be fetching quite a premium at the mo I would have thought.

Work out how much money youve got to spend then have a look at how much a car you like would cost to run for the mileage youre planning. People get far too hung up on mpg. My missus car returns phenomenal mpg but cost her £18 000 !!!

You may be able to buy a big or boring motor dead cheap although it'll cost you a tad more in fuel but at the end of the day has cost you the same per mile.

Take into account everything like cost of exhausts , tyres and insurance.

Ive done that a few times and had some pretty good cars

Good example of getting it wrong was me with the jeep, tyres turned out to be pricey (i didnt check thoroughly), got it right with the Seat i had, dead cheap to insure not wildly economical fuel wise but fast as hell to drive (golf 16v engine) and dead cheap to buy and service

ADZ if you buy a bloody KA I will personally stick it right up your hatchback
Why not get a focus diesel 1.8 turbo thingy , easily 45 -50 mpg with lead boots
Good n cheap plus reliable etc . Estate versions too if your collecting big bits

Nissan Micra every time. Comfy, 1.0 ltr 16v returns 45-50mpg, cruises happily at 80mph, snicky little gearbox, cheap as chips to run and repair, and very nippy in traffic if you keep the revs up. Take rear seats out and its a surprisingly roomy little van....stick a sheet of MDF where the passenger seat is and you can sleep in it very happily.

Easily accommodates a six-footer.

Hoot to drive and £500 would get you an R plate K11 with 70-80k miles on and plenty to go.

We've had several of 'em and never a bummer.

There isn't any competition in its price bracket.

Watching a few on ebay

Had an old Mk1 on a C plate & it was a 950cc auto

Went well & at the time £20 filled it up & it done around 325 on a full tank
