Doesn't sound right mate, change your fuel filter and check your intercooler hoses that they aren't split, you may be losing turbo pressure or have a blocked fuel filter, how heavy is the van?

I'd change the filter for starters and check the hoses and see how you get on

I tow an Abbey Expression 540 which is around 1400kgs when loaded up. Weight wise you don't know its there and have no trouble doing the legal limit for towing with the terrano. I had to go up quite a steep incline to a site and it did it in 4th gear.

Also check your vac pipes. I had one perished and stopped the turbo running. No warnings or lights. Just no turbo. Still got to speed but took longer. Definitely wouldn't have towed my caravan.
