Mornin y'all

I'm taking a mate off-roading tomorrow, as a temp measure for when I get onto the soft stuff can i literally just disconnect my air intake pipe from the air box

The pipe with the maf, I could just face up above the box?

No disconnect the small plastic oval part that connect to the wing.

what fez says mate.
don't disconnect the filter from the engine or you run the risk of pulling crud and dust in there.

there are a couple of clips/screws that hold the plastic tubing to the inner wing then it should pull off the front of the airbox.

this is where the plastic tubing connects to the inner wing.
this is what it should look like when you have removed it

The tubing is inside the wing or outside?

I'm sure my bonnet is a lot more populated. It should be easily reachable?

it fits from the air box bolted to the inner wing.if you open your bonnet you will have the plastic part bolted along the side of the wing.
this it what it will look like when you remove it
