Well stripped the rest of the box today, and found the real cause of the problem, the shaft that the reverse clutch assembly runs on had wear and had picked up metal wise, this is where the oil under pressure will go to the reverse clutch but as it was well worn but not smooth I guess it suffered oil starvation for some reason, one of the oil ways had a very small aperture and may have blocked but whatever it meant that on selecting reverse most of the pressure was lost through the large gap on the bearing surfaces, I can only guess as to why this happened, but a possibility is the failed drive plate last year that allowed the torque converter to run out of true, perhaps causing some damage, but more likely some debris blocking an oil way, Rick

Thought you may want to see a Pic, you can see the oil hole in the clutch housing on the right and a slot in the spigot on the left item and also the rough wear marks, because of the slack oil pressure would also be able to travel from drilling's out of sight into the revers clutch from the low clutch feed so when the low clutch was engaged the revers clutch would be dragging, Rick

The pic is not very clear, and some of what you see is fibers from my rag but suffice to say the slop between the two is bad 20 thou at least so some pretty bad wear occurred here, the spigot is cast iron, the clutch housing hardened steel, need less to say the cast has suffered worst, and really I can only put it down to oil starvation, Rick
