It actually means feck all. Doing a speed check is the ONLY time you'll see your max download capability as its cutting out nearly all latency and only sending a tiny amount of data from which it extrapolates your 'speed'.
Most web pages max at about 1Mb/s and if you add in interrnet latency, database lookups, throttling and all the other garbage, you'll never get anywhere near the advertised service. Because the speed test is so blatantly fraudulent the only real way to check the speed of a big download. For example, I pay for 10Mb and the fastest download speed I can get anywhere (films from various sites) is around 700kb/s with just one download running and nothing else working. Its a dirty great big con. Sorry. |

Doesn't escape the fact that Gav will never download anything at 50Mb or anywhere near it. As Jace says, great if you want more people connected, but in reality a 10Mb service that works to its full capacity would be under-utilised by a single user. |

also depends on the contention ratio a lot, and the remote servers upoad ability and load at the time, theres so much to consider, but speed test sites are meant as a guide, and they arent real world. The best real world download I can get is just short of 2Meg (my max) via torrents or Microsoft.
