Terrano 2 with noise coming from running gear at low speeds, suggestions???
Hello,
I am new to the owners club and wondered if any of you could help me with a conundrum. My 53 plate Terrano 2 2.7 se has some clunky noises coming from the gearbox/runing gear when moving slowly and changing gear (not grinding noises). At 70 Mph on the motorway it is fine, just when speed is reduced with change of direction and gearing the noise is heard. This is also the case in reverse gear. Is this a common problem? something to be worried about? or otherwise? Thanks, |

prop shaft or your limited slip dif .
but if its clonking on the lsd then thats not good financially. could also be exhaust rubbing or front drive shafts. yours should be engaged i think on a 53 plate as you wont have auto or manual hubs so they will turn all the time your driving so have your drive shafts & props checked , change the lsd oil in your limited slip dif (this must be limited slip dif oil) dont let the motor factors sell you anything different not even oil with additive and have a good look around for rubbing etc its well worth joining fully. most fixes are solved the same day, but often within mins good luck , oh and almost forgot welcome to the club |

but I'd be surprised if those problems are present on a 53 plate unless its got high mileage or has been abused.....the easiest thing to check, especially if you find the front is a bit marshmallowy on bendy bits, is the front anti-roll bar bushes and droplinks.....looked at the ones on the truck I just bought her indoors this afternoon after a rather seasickening ride out to Llandrindrod Wells - its an 02 plate with only 60k miles on it - and one ball joint is rattling around like a pound in a paupers wallet, while the other one is completely adrift.
£15 (can't recall if thats a full set or per side but its cheap as chips) from Milners Offroad for bushes and the droplinks and the job takes about 45 minutes.....its easypeasy. Easy spanner job but you might need a small disc cutter to get the droplinks out of the end of the ARB. If you remove the front roadwheels you'll see droplinks and their rod ends in full view so it will be easy to see if they are bolloxd. Do that first and do it anyway, its cheap, easy and almost certainly needed in any event and will eliminate one potential source of clattering and squeaking. Oh and cough up yer tenner |

Mine initially failed mot on drop links last year and the symptoms were as described.
It could conceivably be a number of things as with my old weak wishbone/anti roll bar suspensioned fords i would go straight to the suspension with a pry bar to check it out |
