heating veg oil idea .... advise please

ok i have fitted an automatic rad to my manual... its got oil cooler inside. so basicly cools the oil to the rad temp....

my plan is to divert fuel line into this spare oil heater. to thin the veg oil

obviously i have questions

1 how do i clean the old residue transmition fluid out of it ?
flush with petrol then flush with diesel . to clean it ?


2 is the coldest thermo stat 82 degrees ? if so will running veg oil at this temp have adverse effect on pump components/ rubbers etc. what is the point veg oil combustion? as i dont want a fire obviously

3 if this works id expect it will start to warm the oil after a couple of miles. ideas on heating oil for start up. could go for a glow thing . but where to place it , could i run it off standard glow relay

1) flush with derv
2) no, you can buy a cooler stat i believe there is a 78 degree stat, the bottom of rad is cooler so i cant see the point of the conversion my self, as for the temp affecting pump rubbers, i doubt if it will make any difference, touch your pump after a few miles, so i think your safe there colin. and combustion is high so again no problem.
3) dont worry about it, start on glow plugs and see if the fuel is heated enough, i've run mine on 100% bio in the winter and so has my neighbour without any problems, even when it went to minus degree's.

1 - don't even worry about it ATF will mix with the veg oil and just burn off, will be really weak concentration so nothing to fret about.

2 - don't change your stat you'll upset performance and economy - chip pans etc are at 140-180 degrees you won't reach half the flash point for veg oil in an oxygen free enviroment with your set up

3 - As said above you're not going to get much heat out of the auto cooler anyway - its designed to cool after all. Put a heat exchanger under the bonnet and plumb it in line with the heater so it gets heat even before the stat opens. Theres details on the net of how to build one using commonly available plumbing parts.

Are you twin tanking? If not you'll more then likely have to dilute the SVO in the winter I ran SVO on my van for a while and during the winter even with lower % start up was rough, I an however run 100% bio all year round without any issues. There's a bio additive for the winter (and there's a cetane booster too), the place I buy bio use both - wonder if it works on SVO.

the idea of the atf oil cooler to heat the svo is really to just thin it, ive found cold its rough but warm it runs ok just still lumpy ... i dont know just feels like its not injecting to a spray like deisel does.... i feel warm it a little will help.

paul recons he got 7 miles before conk out when he wrong fueled one time but that would be from tank to bang time . so i recon we are looking at around 4 miles from new rad to bang , the svo should be getting some warming by then . my hope is about 4 miles
i remember daved put details of the glow plug type oil heater on here before. linked to the standard glow plugs im told glow for 10 mins . i should get full heated oil full time

my old aut rad when i looked had quite a big atf cooler in it so i recon it will warm it ( for free) quite well. and to be honest anything over 50 degrees will be good it willbe nice and thin at that temp anyway.

Just use a 12v heater band and connect it round the fuel filter.

ford mondeo's use heated fuel filters, we had new 99/2000 model and that had heated fuel filter, its a simple job to convert.

It's all a waste of time mate. I've run mine 100% bio through the winter at minus whatever it was Svo was a bit lumpy on syart but only for a minute or two. Never an issue

wont cost nothing to try it. mine dont run as smooth as on diesel anyway. and cant imagine pugs put fuel heaters on just for a giggle so worth looking into

I guess the fuel filter heater thing would be the way to go Heat it electrically too cause it's at start you need it most, then water heater for running
