12000lb winch will be highest rated f that lot but you need to know the power of the motor not the pull force.
6hp motor will draw around 380amp - to give you some idea. I'd hard wire the big winch and use anderson plugs for the other stuff, but again you need to know the spec of the winch motor. 2nd alternators totally up to you really - I've got a 150 amp one to go instead of the std one, don't see point in fitting 2. But have 2nd battery with all auxillaries running off that with a 180amp split charge connecting them or not as i require. |

will a split charge give me a system that wont corrupt the trucks power if i get problems. it would be a lot less work that way. but just dont want to be stuck with no power.
the x3 is possibly 2 hp motor what id like is a system i can run on my truck without problems where i can jump start/ power up other trucks and have the ability to be powered up by another truck rather than dragging batteries about in the mud i dont mind having the fixed winch hard wired i just wanted to be able to disable it and a plug is as good as any. then i can just plug into the socket when winch not in use i beleive the fixed winch was a 4.5hp motor but id have to check |

With any winch its a good idea to fit a cut out so that you can disable it in a hurry if anything goes wrong, also it means you can disable it from fiddling fingers too.
Yes a split charge, if fitted with an over ride switch will enable you to isolate the primary battery and alternator etc so that you don't run the risk of leaving yourself un able to start. With mine I can run all the lights, all told its wired for 1560watts without the engine running and not flatten the starting battery or I can run say my in car PC and Ham radio all day ling parkes up etc and simiarly not flatten the battery. With a winch you might want to wnch through really deep water wiith the engine off (if you haven't got a snorkel) but still ant to restart at the other side. With an over ride you can connect or disconect the 2 batteries at will or allow the system to decide (ie when primary battery voltage reaches prest value). For the small winch you should be ok with 185amp connectors (2hp - 127amp) and they should also be ok for jump leads too as that is a continous rating and a jump start should only need a quick burst of high current. People use andeson plugs on defenders etc cos you can't get at the battery, on ours you can, don't see whats wrong with just a decent set of leads. Sure fot the demountable winch you'll need a connector, you'll also need an isolator too - imagine what would happen if something got jammed in the end of the connector. |

you can get some cracking switches for boats to switch between battery banks, two or three way.
the split charge unit is simply a large diode on a heatsink, you can make one for about £25 if you get a 100A diode from RS components or Farnell........ |
