has anyone had the head off a y61 2.8 diesel engine, if so is it a big job ? I would like some hints and tips on replacing valve guides. my y61 is smoking like hell going down long steep hills.

How many miles has it done? you may just get away with replacing the stem seals, can be done in situe, I take it it is blue smoke, Rick

Could be valve guides or seals. But smoking on overun is often piston rings/bore wear.

thankyou for your repley, yes it is blue smoke and lots of it. the car has done 140 000 miles and is 20 years old os do you think it would have worn rings and bores at that mileage? I see on e bay a reconditioed head can be got for 700 pound , would that be the way to go? I like this car a lot and have never driven a off road moter that gets about like this one it has been lifted and has big wheels and tyres and a stright through stainless exhaust, sounds great. thre is a couple of youtube vidios. nissan patrol vs othmothery sheep wash if you would like to see them. its a great offroader and its not bad on he road.

If it has had regular oil chances then at that mileage it should not be worn at all, but the stem seals will have gone hard with age, cheap fix to do them and likely as not will sort your problem, Rick
