wheel bearing, antiroll bar linkages, steering idler arms....to be replaced

Hi all,

Recently I brought my car to the garage that I've known for the past 15 years and asked them to pre-check my Terrano before MOT (in Dec) - although they said it didn't look too bad considering age, they found the front wheel a bit wobbly when they were checking underneath of the car (lifting it up) - and they sent me a quotation to replace following parts;

front wheel bearing £70 x 2
antiroll bar linkages £35 x 2
steering idler arms £82 x 2

Labour - £60 x 6 hours

totaling up to £734 (£880.80 with VAT)

Do you think this is a fair price?

Thats a total of £155.20 for parts, add another £20 say for postage £175

Damn, I'd do that for £200 on your drive and be done in 4-5 hours I reckon, I'd advise you do your upper and lower ball joints at the same time though as you're going to have to remove the hub to get at the inner wheel bearing

Bet the wheel bearing just needs adjusting up too which isn't a dificult job. 20 mins per side. A bit fiddly but not too bad.

Take a look on the milner site as you can see the steering components or even the manual on here in the downloads section. Basically your steering wheel is on top of the steering column, the steering column goes down through the engine bay to the steering box which is mounted on the drivers side chassis. Steering box converts the round and round movements from steering wheel to side to side movements. There is a short track rod from the steering box to the driver side wheel. There is also a long rod called a drag link between the steering box to the passenger side steering idler, the steering idler is basically a pivot point which is mounted on the chassis at the passenger side. There is a track rod between the idler and the passenger wheel. So basically a series of push rods with ball joints. Hope I haven't been too simple explaining the steering. So weak points are yes the passenger side idler and the two track rods and finally the cnetre drag link.

Anti roll bar links are not too difficult to replace and are a weak point that will need replacing every couple of years. Look hard enough on the forum and you may find a member selling upgraded links if you are keeping the truck for a while.

Of course you could talk nicely to Rick (Solarman).


Good luck with the repairs, the prices given by your garage could simply be because he doesn't know these vehicles very well.

Thank you very much for this! and shame you are not in London.

I see they are keen to charge me plus adding unnecessary quantity. Thought they were good as they've been running for maybe around 20 years, but possibly living off from Japanese customers.

Anyway, maybe I can try to find out more reputable garage (if it exists) to see how much they'd charge me to repair anything necessary to let my car to pass MOT in December.

Mind you, they are probably quoting parts prices for parts sourced from Nissan. Had the same with my garage; they did not want to go into ordering parts online from various places, always only contacted the manufacturer of the car. In the end we agreed that I'd source the parts and they would install them.

As said before: get the parts from Milner's (or any other online source, there's not a lot of difference). And order the top and bottom balljoints at the same time - 99% chance they are goosed, and even if they are not the mounting bolts will shear when trying to undo them.

I replaced exactly the same parts on my 1997 SWB last year (including rear anti-rollbar links). Took me about the same time as quoted by your garage - but then again I'm not a car mechanic and have no access to a lift.

Thanks for your explanation and advise, Jim. I will have a look at manual (haven't used the download section yet). At least this is something I need to ask someone who can do the job. What I was surprised at the most was that the fact MOT didn't show up any of these parts to be replace when it should've been replaced at some point before my purchase

Thank you, perelaa - I can ask this garage where they source these parts and also ask them if I can buy these from this website for their work. I know the garage's owner and this guy was the guy who test drove my Terrano on a motorway the other day to check. Possibly I can assume the hours they quoted appears to be ok and of course they are doing for their profit, £60 per hour...only I could price down for the parts to purchase.

6 hours to replace those parts is way more than a garage mechanic with access to proper tools (air wrench, car lift etc) should need.

Wheel bearings are adjustable (check grease at same time) other stuff piece of cake, I could do the lot for £100 you supply the parts, Rick

How are the wheel bearings adjusted? Mine came up as an advisory on MOT. Slight play. I just presumed I'd have to replace them at some point. Didn't cross my mind to adjust them.

It's the download regarding replacing the bearings. Look at pictures 5 & 6 to see the adjusting washer. Depends upon the year of your truck as the download shows the auto locking front hub but later vehicles are fixed hubs but once the hub is removed they are pretty much the same.
