Never Again
I've just received my invoice from eBay for the selling of my old phone.
It went for the BIN price of £260.00. eBay have just charged me £26.59p. That's a little over 10%. That is the last time I sell on eBay. They've just lost me as a seller |

its a auction, its how they make there money, sticking it on Ebay gave you access to more customers that you could have done yourself, could be worse you could still be trying to sell the phone
for comparison from another auction site 'Vendor’s Commission You will pay 15 per cent of the hammer price on each lot which sells. You will pay a minimum of £10 plus VAT per lot, whether it is sold or not' so 10% aint a bad deal after all |

Then if they pay with PayPal... that's even more to pay out, and if you miscalculated P&P...

eBay even had/has the audacity to take 10% of the postage fee, that was £6.00. Another 60p It cost me more than six quid to send it. Admittedly the buyer asked me to send it special next day delivery, which I agreed to & also I stood to the extra £2.59 |

Ebays fee's are a little extortionate but they do tell you what they will charge you.
To be honest generally you get more money for electronics stuff sold on ebay due to higher demand, but you do pay the fees. Ebays fees for electronics have been 10% for a very long time, Over 5 years for sure. Only very recently have they put that charge on postage fees though. |

Private sellers get a raw deal.
We have pretty much given up selling on e-bay due to the fees except for exceptional items.
e.g. The wife had a genuine full length Blue Fox Fur coat that she was given as a Christmas bonus when she worked in London. Too scared to wear it due to the Animal Rights Issues and dealer in Manchester only offered £90 for it ! Sold on e-bay to a Canadian Buyer for £360 plus International Carriage a couple of years ago !! I give most of our stuff to a local Charity Shop who accept almost anything and they give you a later update as to how much the donation raised ! |

Sometimes It Pays To Complain
I complained to the CEO of eBay regarding what I see as unfair charges regarding my earlier thread.
This is their reply. Dear Mr. Harrison, Many thanks for your prompt response, and for providing me with your eBay details. I’d like you to know that I’ve thoroughly investigated your query and I will be addressing your concerns. I’m very sorry to hear of your disappointment with the fee’s you’ve been charged. Having reviewed the Samsung Galaxy S6 that you sold to “brabrancham” I can see the item sold for £260.00. With eBay, you are charged a final value fee when your item sells. The final value fee is 10% of your total transaction, which includes the postage charge. Having reviewed this transaction, I can confirm the correct fees have been charged for the sale of the Samsung Galaxy S6. For your convenience, I have included a link below which explains the fee structure for private sellers on eBay; We note that you successfully sold an item on the 12th June and I can see from your invoice that you were charged a £6.21 final value fee which was 10% of the total selling price of the item. We also offer a fee calculator on-site which will allow you to see the exact fee’s you will be charged if your item sells which you may find beneficial should you decide to sell on eBay in the future. I understand you feel it is unfair to charge fees on the £6.00 P&P charge. Our research shows that Buyers are consistently looking for free postage and a range of delivery options when they buy online. Having monitored buying behaviour on the site, it was clear that listings with both a fast and free postage option sold better than those without. Based on the above, we decided to apply final value fees in a way that would promote better selling practices. Buyers can also filter their search results to only view items that offer free P&P. I can appreciate that there are overheads such as packing materials and getting to your local Post Office. Many Sellers will implement this cost into the item price. By including free postage, you may boost the visibility of your listing. We do truly value you as a member of the eBay Community. We recognise that you’ve been a long standing member and I just wanted to add that we do review our fee structures twice a year and we do take into account any feedback that our members provide. As a goodwill gesture, I have credited back the final value fee’s for this transaction. I’m sorry to send what I realise may be a disappointing response. I can assure you that eBay have not lost their customer ethos, and customer service is at the heart of our business. We strive to resolve any issues that arise in a timely manner. I sincerely hope this experience does not deter you from using eBay in the future. Thank you for taking the time to escalate your feedback and experience to eBay’s Executive Office. Kind regards, Sarah Whyte eBay Office of the President It still won't change the fact that I don't agree with their charges & I will not be using eBay again to sell items. |

Always good to complain. there are ways and there are ways to complain. A shouty rant is likely to get you nowhere.
I think, given the exposure that Ebay gets you, that 10% isn't really excessive, it just feels that way on larger ticket items. They've done all the hard work for you in finding a global audience of people looking for that one item that you're selling. I imagine that they'd still be making plenty of money at 5% or even a fixed price. I got stung for £70.00 odd with a reserve price on an item that didn't sell, a quick phone call and it all went away. I still think that it's a great resource for a quick sale and an excellent way of setting up a small business. Well done for the result. |
