Default 5th gear noise

Ref my mails of yesterday and advice given.
Just taken the car down to my local garage here in France. The owner came out with me.He is an ex Racing car mechanic.
He immediately said that the noise. Was because the Pinion needs replacing .
He did draw me a picture and it seems to be the feed into the gear box area where the pinion needs replacement.

Can someone please explain what it is and why t his would be causing noise in 5th gear only.
All other gears are quiet and normal. Its only in 5th when I put the power on with the accelerator.

Thanks
Jon

Default Moderator can you move this thread?

Hi, rather than start a new thread on the same issue, best to continue with the current one on..
http://www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com/f...ght=gear+noise

On that, it was mentioned that the layshaft is possibly the problem
This is the input shaft to the gearbox, so might also be called the idler, but it is a common issue on these gearboxes.
