My Terrano has let me down tonight

Flat battery! Well not totally flat, just not enough to start her. In hind sight the last two or three starts took a bit longer and didn't turn over as fast as normal.

I will have a look tomorrow, fingers crossed it is just a battery failure and I will see a cell gassing. I have a brand new battery that I bought for my business van - Renault Traffic, so if it's a battery, I hope that it will fit.

I will also check the charge rate...

Check the positive terminal is intact, they have a tendancy to break off the cable.

As Jim says, check the positive terminal, as the way it is made can make it look like it is fitted to the terminal fine, but the bit the wire connects to, can snap away and be loose underneath the main part of the terminal..

This time of year there is more draw on the battery...heater fan, heated rear window, lights, so if your battery isn't 100% this time of year will soon tell.

You can always find a secure place to carry the spare battery and a pair of jump leads, and haul it out when needed.

Also make sure all your glow plugs are working, if you are cranking too long to start, then that won't help.

Gets you out of trouble and may help to isolate where the fault is without forking out £80 + for a new battery.

Also check terminal voltage of battery.
First thing in the morning before starting
Whilst on tick over
When running on fast tick over
After a good run.

This might help to explain a battery issue, or an alternator problem.
Eliminate these, then you might have a terminal problem or a lazy starter

Had same problem yesterday & only put a new battery on last year but think it was my fault started it up to move it further up the drive left it running for 5 mins & switched it off & wouldn't start again don't think I left it long enough to fully recharge got it jump started ok took it for a good 7 mile run & it restarted fine after that

OK, I checked the terminals and leads, nothing lose/broken found. I have a digital discharge tester, connect that, set the CCA (700) and carried out the test, no fault found via the tester and I didn't see any cells bubbling - I have a non sealed battery on it. I have one one those cr@ppy led battery testers that tells you if the battery condition is OK, alternator OK etc, used that, all OK it tells me.

Voltmeter on battery = 12.3 volts. Tried to start, barely turned over, cranking volts down to 9v approx. Jump started with my spare van battery, yes makeitfit the terminals are the wrong way round

Anyhow engine running, volts 14.47 so alternator is charging. Ran for a while until warm. Stopped and restarted OK without jump battery, tried again and barely turns over. Right, remove battery cell tops, crank for a while, quickly run to look at the cells and find the left hand on nearest the neg terminal bubbling like a goodun. So my discharge tester and led tester absolutely no use what so ever... I think I will look out for a discharge tester like I used to use, the one you just hold on the terminals.

So battery gone, new spare battery won't fit, so it is a new battery, any tips? Higher CCA ? Make of battery?

Battery on at the moment is a Platinum - see attached photee.

What I meant was the spare battery may be the wrong way round to suit the T2 .Nissan have back to front terminal positions. Keep up

Yes the picture is taken from the windscreen to read the label. The Renault Traffic battery I have has the neg on the left and pos on the right
