Question Bio diesel

what actually is bio diesel? is it better then veg oil? thing is when i get a diesel van, i want to look into alternative/cheaper fuels

most petrol stations mix it with diesel, morrisons add 7.5%. like veg oil, but more expensive and a bit runnier. no better or worse tbh

I have never really considered using veg oil.
2/3 years ago veg oil was cheap as chips(which also are not cheap any more)
but they cottoned on to the fact as people were using it for fuel.
and the price shot through the roof.
Is it still cost efficient?
and will my truck run on it?
does it perform the same?
is it cheaper to have a reused oil supplier ( eg used chipshop oil) and refine it?
If I can save money and go green laning more often

It has been rumoured that TD42 trolls love the stuff neat
mine used to get the odd litre of proper Derv in the winter to thin it out a bit but it never complained.
As for it's baby brothers you would have to cousult the forum. Diesels were originally developed to run on peanut oil and the old skool will run on almost anything... Paraffin, fuel oil, sunflowers or vegitables so long as it is liquid and combustible, if you can keep candle wax hot enough to get to the pump it would probably run on that too.

Home made/ back yard made bio is just cleaned veg oil with added methanol etc
I get it for 80p a litre. It's thinner than SVO and so run neat all year round
That makes a 'king huge saving according to my maths.
Now say it's not worth it

Straight new veg oil is a pound a litre if you look around. I run 60-70 % svo in my Patrol. I save about 60 quid a month.

Bio diesel can attack and damage seals and pipes and from my mates who have run it they say it's too much hassle.

Waste veg oil needs a lot of filtering and heating to burn off contaminants and water before use, hence that's a bit too much hassle for me too.

You can thin svo with a bit of petrol, say 10% but the petrol reduces the already reduced cetane from the veg oil.

I ran my TD42 right up to 90% svo recently and it ran fine, I was just not happy pushing the fuel system with it at such a high proportion because the extra viscosity is bound to put added strain on the lift/injector pump although there's plenty of people in warmer climes running td42 and other similar inline injector pump indirect injection equipped engines on 100% veg.

I've never noticed any performance losses. One thing you have to bear in mind is that there has been talk of ring gumming, especially on direct injection engines, caused by unburnt veg when the engine is cold. To guard against this, I drive off as soon as oil pressure is up when it's a cold start. You shouldn't idle the engine to warm it up from cold on veg. Again this is mainly confined to direct injection engines, and it's rare but you know how internet rumours can spiral out of control, I prefer not to take the risk.

Ran my troll 100% tesco veg,I only put £10 derv in it,out of guilt, over the winter. It still starts first turn of the key. yeah it smells a bit but so what!
Still not sure about the swap to peTroll...

Bio has none of the viscosity issues of SVO and 20% cheaper ,I win
I have sometimes had to put SVO in the old girl when out of bio.
I can't see how bio will be any worse than SVO for damage though ? It's made from the same stuff.
Another solution to the petrol in SVO mix is to add a cetane booster
Any road up the Trol will drink anything with gusto so I just put the cheapest in it, works for me
And nothing to the treasury ha ha

That's the stuff I use 50 Ltrs & 5 Ltrs unleaded just to keep it thin, gets quite cold on Dartmoor

I run my 1975 twin Lister gen set on old engine oil left to settle for a few months then fine filtered then add 20 to 30 % red derv plus some acetone runs a dream, but have a late Mitsubishi gen set and will only run that on straight red, Rick
