Clunk
My Terrano 2003 purchased three months ago, has an odd clunk when in full lock to the left.No problems if full lock not used, and no problems to right full lock. I can only describe it as a clunking sound.If I do a left turn and do not use the full lock there is not a problem. Any Idea's. Other than that it runs like a dream.
I live in France and have it booked into the local garage next week for investigation.,but They are not Terrano experts. Normal driving is excellent, the problem is only full lock to the left. Oh yes an excellent Club, very glad that I joined. Thanks |

well, id be 99% sure its the bump stops. give them all a good dollop of grease and that should fix it.
there are two per wheel. do that, and cancel your garage appointment. |

Grease your lock stops
On hub and bottom arm, they are contact points that determine your full lock |

Turn your wheels out and have a look from the front, you'll spot em. Just look like metal door stops. They grind against each other so thick grease sorts it. Or stop short of full lock like I do.
Mine is like yours, Left grinds Right is fine, for now. |

Lock stops
Thanks for the inspection info.Have looked and the plastic caps are broken or missing. Will order up new caps, fit and grease and it should solve the problem.until then I will drive at 90% left lock.

Caps
If I just grease them will they still rub metal to metal when I am at full lock.
Surely the plastic caps stop that happening , or am I wrong. These are the lock stops, are the bump stops different. |

Lock stops, Just stops the noise. It's ok for the metal to rub.

Nice new plastic caps will be great for a year or so, then wear through to the metal anyway, so save some time and money, grease them every 3 months, leave them alone other than that.
The stops are in a " high wash area" ie the grease will always get washed off in the rain. The suspension is tough enough anyway. JUST avoid being on full lock when bouncing over rocks and things. I always go to full lock, then back off a bit, I have never heard mine clunk since following my own advice. If it ain't broke.... don't fix it.

Grease
Off to the shops in the morning to buy a grease gun.
Do I grease the bump stops the same. It's a bloody good job I am a member of the Club. My French is not excellent and I cannot imagine going into the shop and asking for a grease gun for my Bump Stop,!!!! |
