Default newbie looking 4 advice

hi all

i am looking at buying a terranoII around the 02 03 plate,
before i part with my cash i would like to know of any problem or what too look out for before i buy,

i have been a member of all the cars i have bought as forums are priceless in the way they help ppl

Hi and welcome aboard.

I prefer the 2.7 engine to the 3 litre, 27 has no timing belt or chain to worry about for one thing.
Check the front auto locking freewheeling hubs, on that year it may have fixed front hubs. Basically people don't use 4wd until the bad weather so it can cause problems. Easy enough to fix if it's just the "brake rings" in the hubs and theres loads of threads about them not to mention downloads when you're a full member.
If theres any sign of rust in the rear wheel arches where the seatbelt mounting is clean it all up and a good coat of under seal before it's too late.
As soon as you get it change the rear diff oil and make sure it has LSD Oil and not gear oil even with an additive. At the same time get the gear oil and front transfer box oils done too for good measure.

Basically like most cars look after them and they'll look after you.

Hi & welcome.... as stated above re rusty bits and diff..... an 02/3 plate will likely be a fixed hub model so no worries about the springs in the auto hubs! check it works in 4WD..... not the most economical of vehicles but good fun to drive! Water pumps can go but easy enough to fix... my 02 terrano has suffered odd electrical gremlins with the wipers but fixed ok.. good luck

Rusty fuel pipes.
Clutch flexi hose bursting.
clutch damper rusting.
Cheap fuel filters sucking air.
Glow plug power feed breaking off.
Lazy starters.
Poor battery connections giving poor starting.
Dead MAFs
Worn out clutches (££££ to change)
Grumbly back axles overdue for lube change.
Saggy torsion bars.
Shagged front shocks.
Shagged steering idlers.
ABS lamp on.
Worn out ignition switch.
Water pumps leaking.
Rusty sills.
Seized front caliper sliders.

There's a few to check!

That is a very good list mate well done.
I can only add, rear seat belt points easy to see on rear inner wings.
rear wings at the end of the cills, and 2nd row seats rear resting points particularly nearside for some reason, Rick

I have just had my motorcycle serviced and MOT'd so it is now for sale. Then I can start looking for a truck in anger, can't wait.

I have had my Maverick from new for 16 + years, and I will highlight those that have been an issue on mine.


Drop links - changed 3 times and bushes !!!!!!!!!!!!
Rusty fuel pipes.
Clutch flexi hose bursting.
clutch damper rusting.
Cheap fuel filters sucking air.

Glow plug power feed breaking off. Glow plugs replaced every 5 years.

Lazy starters.
Poor battery connections giving poor starting.
Dead MAFs
Worn out clutches (££££ to change)
Grumbly back axles overdue for lube change. Change oil regularly LSD Oil
Saggy torsion bars. 10 minutes with a spanner.
Shagged front shocks.
Shagged steering idlers.
ABS lamp on.
Worn out ignition switch.
Water pumps leaking.
Rusty sills.
Seized front caliper sliders. not seized on mine, but cleaned and greased when any work done on the brakes.

Not bad in 16 years, but also check rear wheel bearings, check for oil on the rear brake back plate.
Also wet carpet in passenger foot well, as long as this isn't coolant, easy fix.
