You said it - fantastic "on" roads (very little traffic & fantastic views) and "interesting" off-roading, blinding dust clouds in hot weather and mud up to the side-steps when it rains, not to mention the fords that are likely to appear anywhere when the water pours off the mountains!

None that I have come across, probably one car in five is a 4WD, but that's because so many people live up mountain tracks, they are a vehicle of necessity rather than fun (where we stay is 25 miles from the coast, up in the mountains).
My daughter, who lives there (me and the wife just spend around six months of the year there), has a Mitsubishi Montero, her next door neighbour a Mitsubishi Pajero and various friends of theirs have most models of Mitsubishi 4x4's between them, plus Vitaras are pretty popular - strangely it appears to be mostly the Spanish who buy Terranos and Mavericks, but then, they were built there.
The downside of buying a 4x4 over there is, because 50% of people need them because of the terrain, they really hold their price, like 3-4000€ for a 12-year old Terrano - hence the reason I bought mine in the UK, drove it down to the the Malaga region, used it for 15 months or so on the UK plates (until the Guardia starting clamping down), then put it on to Spanish plates - an expensive business, but still cheaper than buying one in Spain.

We had two and a half weeks in a Villa in Sitio de Calahonda in June. We hired a Ford C-Max though. I kept looking up at the mountains and telling the family I wanted to go exploring. The highest we got was Mijas!

We saw a few Terrano's, loads of Pajero's and even a few Jeep Wranglers.

My daughter lived in Calahonda when she and her family first arrived in Costa Del Sol, nice area, not too busy, unlike the near neighbours of Torremolinos and Fuengirola, and Mijas is the place we always take any friends we happen to have staying with us, very pretty but usually full of Japanese tourists!
Spain is a country of contrasts, from the Costa Del Blackpool of the south coast to the peace and tranquility of the lakes (where my photo of the Terrano was taken), and the Sierra Nevada National Park, which has it's own ski resort, complete with four ski lifts - we love it!
