At enormous cost (including overpriced insurance), two months of battling the Spanish system and frustation at the "manana" attitude, I finally have my Spanish plates!!

My T2 has been in Spain for around 15 months - a foreign-plated car can only be used in Spain for 6 months, after that it has to be registered as a Spanish car (hence the Spanish plates). Since Jan 1st the Guardia Civil has been stopping British-plated cars if they are not displaying a valid UK tax disc (mine wasn't!) and giving the owner two weeks to start the process of registering as a Spanish vehicle or get the hell out of Spain!The penalty for not doing this is the car will be impounded and after two weeks, crushed! As the Guardia Civil (and most other government departments) are extremely short of money they are enforcing this with great enthusiasm - it cost me around £1700 to complete the process (this includes about £500 to get a Spanish MOT, new shocks all round and sort excessive emissions) so it's quite a money spinner for the Spanish government. The alternative of buying a 4x4 in Spain already on Spanish plates is a non-starter, a 15-16 year-old Terrano over there will cost around £4000, they charge for registering change of ownership, which can cost 600 or 700€ - thats in the country that builds the bloody things! It's a no-brainer!

Wow Terranical! 4k that's a hell of a price for a 'very mature' T2 in Spain - and I thought France was expensive! I originally intended to buy a newer T2 in the UK and import it to France, which would have cost something in the region of 1k, including ferry & fuel, over and above the cost of the truck of course. But I found a French 7 year old 3ltr T2 in VGC at my local Nissan dealer for 8k Euros, including 2y MOT equivalent and a 12 month guarantee!! Who's a happy bunny then????

Last year in Tenerife, I spotted an exact replica of my 2001 T2 only LHD, just 50,000km's on the clock, and they wanted 9000 euros !!!!!!!!

Buying one in France sounds like a plan! That would save the cost of replacing the headlights & rear lights, which alone cost me nearly £400 (and they were second hand). The basic charge for the changeover (including the admin, number plates plus a mark-up by the insurance office that translated all the documents for me) was 830€ plus 120€ for the car to be examined to ensure it was standard (no oversize wheels or body lift, took him all of 5 minutes), 160€ for the ITV (Spanish MOT), 526€ to get the work done to pass the ITV, plus the £395 for LHD lights, then to put the tin lid on it, 323€ for third party insurance and 123€ for a years tax, and it is still cheaper than buying a Spanish registered Terrano (if you can find one!)
