Like the price but if it comes to it and I do get stuck, I'd prefer chain.

Chains are brilliant when there is a good layer of snow, better all round option is winter tyres, but as you're just need chains to comply with the law, there's no need for winter tyres. Just learn how to fit chains before you go as it's not advisable at the side of the road at -5ºC. The other tip is to fit them the night before a snowfall as it's easier to take them off in the morning if the snow doesn't fall.
Good point about fitting the night before.

As Don says, proper winter tyres make a huge difference. Snow socks are meant to get you out of trouble, but some leave them on and they don't fare well

If push comes to shove, I've found some in Spain and can give them a call to see how much and whether they'll post to UK.

EDIT: Here's an Amazon link to follow and wait till they get some more stock in; http://www.amazon.es/Lampa-16125-Cad.../dp/B0096NBOIE

Good luck finding those snow chains! I think Trolpower is all you need and the roads are well kept here during winter. But if it makes you feel more safe
Snapped this picture this morning while driving to work. It's getting cold now and expect it to get even worse in February!

I know the picture is a bit unclear but yes, it is -28ºC
