No must be red triangles, the right way up too.

On the other hand, you sometimes see bike racks with an extra tail board on, as the original is partially covered, sometimes these have red triangles fitted, technically illegal too.

If you also look at it there was little in the way of support at the front, just a little stand and not very well centred and no support at the back. Must of been a hell of a weight too. I still think the idea is brilliant.

It is a brilliant idea but just not executed very well in this build.
I would have blanked it off at the bulk head and kept all four doors and some more of the shape.
Fill in the rear wheel arch to give more space inside and bolt it onto a proper chassis with the correct axles and brakes.

Reminds me of the several I've seen made from the rear end of a Reliant 3-wheeler, but bigger & much heavier.
I, like others have remarked, also have grave doubts of it's legality on the roads. But I suppose it's a better end than the scrap-yard.....

my concern was could it modded to have a gross of under 750kg if not braked.

on otherhand with a braked trailer hitch, could the rear hubs handbrake shoes
not be connected. though wouldnt be auto reverse.

how about electric brakes, or find way of connecting the hydraulic circuits, guess
not like air brakes.

always used to fancy doing this with a series landy.

When we were up in Yorkshire on holiday last month we saw a pathfinder towing a modded vw camper.
Didn't have time to get any pics as it was on a round about but looked well.

You could poss adapt the braking system from a sankey trailer as I think they were braked or poss even use the axle off one You could prob reduce the weight quite a bit by trimming out metal from the inside of the body shell & poss turning some of the chassis into C section instead of box as your not going to have heavy things like engine & gearbox hanging from it & the glass changed over to perspex

Easy way round the hubs would be to fit a hitch like what is on the wife's horse trailer.
You just flip a lever over on it to stop the brakes coming on in reverse.
Could then use existing handbrake cables for braking.

Since 1989 it has been a legal requirement that trailer brakes are of the auto reverse type. The auto reverse mechanism, inside the brake, senses when the trailer is going backwards and the normal forward braking mechanism is overridden. One of the features auto reversing brakes include is that the handbrake mechanism must have an energy store fitted to ensure efficient braking when the trailer is at rest.
All trailer brakes have to be type approved, this is an important safeguard. Trailer users often ask if it is legal to use car brakes on trailers, even though this used to be the case, it is no longer legal to build a new trailer using car type brakes. In the past the handbrake mechanism on hydraulic brakes was used but this does not give the required braking efficiency.

This is a 1969 rice farmers hunt horse trailer.
So many laws and regs on trailers and all of them as clear as mud if you read all the vosa web pages.
As long as it's safe what's the problem......oh yes vosa is self funded.

In the early 70s I had a Sunbeam Talbot with a hardboard sided Bluebird van that we took abroad, I fitted vacuum brakes to the van that replicated the vac on the car (not a standard fitment on the car but a regular upgrade at the time) worked perfectly over the Swiss Alps, and no need for reverse stuff and nonsense, worked just as well in reverse as did forward, Rick
