If the reason for refusal is implied or direct racism they can't and if someone suspected it was and complained then the venue would have to come up with a reason and it would have to be pretty good - gone are the days when a publican could put a sign on the door saying: "no blacks, no Irish" And I am glad they are gone

The landlord does not have to give a reason for refusing entry/to serve/eject a customer. Comes down to the fact its their licence.

Its also the fact the police are obliged to assist them achieve that unless the request is clearly unlawful for any other reason.

It need never go into the racism scenario either by implication or directly.

There must be more to that story on the link.

That appleby landlord last night was incredibly tactful

Whilst the series was well entertaining i think ultimately it took the piss out of those "travellers" involved. It almost became a parody.

Also quite interesting was the irish traveler vs english romany "debate" on the Jeremy Vine show

Need not? in many cases it really does need to!

I agree have found the whole series a parody, and yes I witnessed a lot of that heavy handed policing first hand at Appleby last year. Sad but it happens!

But to be honest, I think this thread is in danger of going down the road of so many others - and so soon after the last ones I'm not convinced it is a good idea. What do you think?

didn't hear the Jeremy vine thing, i will look for it on I player

well from my teacher

traveller is usually irish traveller, more likely to be caravan based
in family communities, as per most of shown on documentry.

classicly roman catholic, guess from irish roots.

gypsy, or romany, more likely to have a house and caravan,
and integrate in general community.

the romanys came from india,
many do have links with romania.
are going to be more british than average british if can say
that!

typically grouped together but closer inspection ! reveals chalk and cheese
though caravans and horses and family loyalty are strong characteristics
guess same could be said of many other folks.

TTT2 is pretty spot on, 'Gypsy' is a pejorative term that has been to a degree reclaimed in the way many politically active black people reclaimed the word that start with 'N' in the 70's. It originally referred to only Romany people and those that arrived here before and during the rain of Henry the eighth. I could explain the origins and meaning of the word, but this isn't a proper history lesson . Therefore, Gypsy (which should always be capitalised like English or Welsh) technically refers to Travelling people of Romany (Indian) origin only and not Irish Travellers. They are two distinct and separate groups with separate languages, customs and traditions.

i doubt it,not in a nasty way but id be unsure he could read and write enough, so someones hi jacked his life, i cant believe after all his swagering hes in court giving evidence against anyone let alone family! (thats acepting the suns version as 90% fiction lol)
whilst not big on education i do believe maths and english are so important everyone should be able to read and write and add up,other things history, goegraphy,re etc less important.

it looks hijacked, the photos are all ones that could be got from web sites, and agreed his diction seams better than i would have expected. And as for the sun story - i don't think we ought to get into any more debates based on tabloid fiction
