I would be lost without the Home PC, last year when It had a virus, it was off line for 10 days, I bought a net book (with windows 7) and I can do most web surfing with that, so at least I am still on line if one goes down.
I can use it at BT hotspots as well, but I wouldn't send credit card or bank details on it.

I use the main one for photos, typing, file handling, printing and I have a couple of 8Gb USB memory sticks.. Just the job. Oh and a seperate hard drive for back-up.

However on the netbook with windows 7, internet explores usually crashes most nights..
I may use another system. Firefox possibly?

Pc's are great WHEN they work, but a pain when something happens that shouldn't.
Doesn't sound that bad to me, but I took mine to PC World and they sorted it for £20-£30 I think.
It wouldn't let me get on line, so no one remote could help on this one.

Not sure how wiping the operating system and installing a word processing package is gonna fix owt though?!

Nothing wrong with Vista but it is very resource hungry.....to downgrade to XP you need to get someone to do a complete operating system install. But for £50 or less you can upgrade to Windows 7.....MUCH less resource hungry and runs faster.

Wireless 1st

Lynns laptop / PC & my mobile can all be connected as my laptop will be to the wireless network (ours / secure)

Lynn can sit next to me & we can both be online & mine will randomly kick me off whilst Lynns laptop & my mobile are conected fine

That would say my laptop is the problem I have to keep on ' diagnosing & repairing'

When it comes to downloading or uploading it just seems to have a mind of its own as to what it wants to down / upload

It freezes & crashs more times than Briggie posts

I've run AGV & defraged / cleaned the disc on a daily basiss

So its either badly viruss'd up or plan screwed

ok, few thinsg you can do. first, diagnose the wireless-does it have a mechanical switch on the laptop, to turn it off and on? or is it via a function key press?could be a hardware fault here, or just a screw up with the vista network protocols, generally fixed by reinstalling the network protocols, and certainly worth upgrading the wireless driver.

as for the random stuff, try a sfc /scannow, to do that, click "start", in Run" type in sfc /scannow hit enter, a black box should pop up, or similar, saying its doing a system file check. This will check all the major system files for issues, and repair any problems found. might also be worth checking how the internet works if using firefox-do you get the same issues, if not, then IE is an issue and needs upgrading, removing or repairing...

might also be worth setting a static IP too, diagnosing and repairing renews your ip from the router.

sound like the wireless is a driver fault and the driver needs to be updated mine would do this with cirtain updates from ms on windows 7 and it turned out to be an out of date driver

down loads what program are you using ? is it explorer or mozilla ?

i would advise a download manager like flashget or something else most are free

is it my files causing you problems downloading ?

windows vista was a pain in the royal ass so much so that it drove alot of people to mac's thier were driver issues and stability issues most of which have been fixed now with updates

vista is far to resource hungry and this is the main problem of instability

i upgraded to vista from xp and a week latter went back to xp and waited for 7

i still run xp media on my laptop as it talks to phones and nav units better than 7

ok cool, this isnt a fix in itself, but it will at least sort out any broken files on the laptop so class it as major step one!

next get those drivers checked. You may need to upgrade your wireless card drivers, and theres a few ways of doing this, my first port of call would be the laptop manufacturers website, go there, go to support and drivers, find your laptop model, then find the drivers for the wireless, download to laptop, then install. when you install, it will cut you off the net for a minute then should re connect.

next step is to check IE, if you are using IE? if so, download firefox, and use that, see if you get the same issues. if not, find out what version of IE you have (click help / about internet explorer) and if its not 8, you need to upgrade.
