Who'd have thought a few years ago ICI wouldn't exist and those once mighty sites would basicaly be industrial estates Seen the same thing happening at Ardeer Site in Scotland

Talking to an individual at one major plant, theyve scaled down, if they run up to full capacity, which isnt happening, its still only 50% of production a year ago.
The problem there is that very few of the plants produce something you or I see in the shops. What they do do though is produce the ingredients so as soon as say one plastic moulding company goes under who make car parts, several polymers and plastics producers cut back so the acid plant has no work and the nitrogen plant isnt needed nor the heavy drivers who pull the tankers........its a nightmare |

Dave know exactly what your saying.
I've worked in various old ICI Divisions, Speciality Chemicals, Silicones Petrochemicals & Plastics, Acids, Nylon and Acrylics. One major problem now that was never appartent in the ICI days, as all businesses were linked to each other, one might not be doing so well but it supplied another few that were making a mint. If an ICI plant needed X chemical and ICI made it, it had to be purchased from within, so it kept things ticking over nicely in hard times, even paint had to be dulux Separate all that and the brown stuff hits the fan big style When new technology was developed for an existing product, the new plant was always 1st built in the UK The companies that now own the plants always retreat to their own countries when times are hard, easier to shut down the out posts in the UK or build a new plant in China or Singapore as there all doing now. Pay the locals 30 bob a week and don't give a monkies about polution
