Newbie in Northern Scotland
Hello
I took the plunge on a 2007 3.0 Di. Unusually for me I dived right in. Think I should have done more research! Drove it up from the south yesterday. Seemed to drive OK but I had a quick poke around this morning. Seems to have a bit of an oil leak up top which could be intercooler, but needs further investigation. Could also have used a bit of coolant on the drive I will need to monitor. After years of Land Rover ownership I was hoping to retire the spanners or reduce time at the garage to just a yearly service! (to be fair all but one of my landies were pretty much trouble free! But that one was another story!) |

Hi and warm welcome, just returned from a Wales trip with the lads in my Patrol, I have the 2.8 but Mrs has a 3 in her T2 but not had much dealings with it yet, but do have to say I obtained a used intercooler as the original leaked oil, I still have it and if one day I find the time to locate the leak can get it welded up, Rick

A 2007 model is well outside of the "danger zone", the earlier engines used to suffer catastrophic failure due to a design flaw. If you're losing oil at the top, you can be your bottom dollar it's the intercooler itself or one of the related hoses, I've seen this so many times before If you're dropping coolant, again this could be a tired rad hose or a jubilee clip that's been nipped up a bit too tight and put a little split into one of the hoses. Get some cardboard under the truck when you park it and monitor where it's dripping from, work you way back up

The problems were worst on the Series 2 (2000/2001). Series 3 (2002/2004) are better, but still have problems. Series 4 are better again, but not immune. The CRD model seemed to finally resolve the issues.

Hello Rd,Your Patrol will be fine once you sort the minor probs.Sounds like you have had a Discovery3? I like you have used L.rovers for 35 years and still have Discovery 2 comercial.I bought my Patrol as I had bought a Discovery 3,a beautiful thing to drive and great off road until it ate all its bushes with great regularity or wheel alignment was off the first burn you went through!
Nail in the coffin was a trip up to my pals in Stonehaven,passing Laurencekirk I decided to stop off the A90 for a feed.On approach to the village the engine seized solid,seemingly common problem. I have had a few niggles with the Patrol but all apart from main fuel pump were easy and relatively economic to sort.It stands up to abuse off road and will ford deep burns easier than Landrover.Also towing is excellent. Hope you get on with yours ok,where abouts oopnorth are you and I will keep an eye out,I am down in Ayrshire now from Glen Lyon for my sins but work all over the country. |
