Default MattsTerrano Polo is poorly

Hi guys, my sons VW Polo 1.4tdi is poorly. Would love to hear opinions please. Typical it couldn’t of happened at a worse time, I’m tied up on a course all weekend having to travel 50 miles each way on Saturday and Sunday. I need to fix up my project truck ready for MOT too.

So whilst driving home he had to slow down for another car and once clear he put it in 1st whilst car was still moving which gave the engine a jolt. He carried on and then noticed oil light come on at about 1800 rpm, if he eased off the oil light went off. He carried on and started losing power and the engine sounded tapety. He’s going to get the car towed in to a local garage tomorrow but doubt they’ll be able to look until sometime next week in fairness. He’s checked oil level which is fine. When he removed oil cap he could see some steam or smoke coming out.

Please forgive the description but it’s his words.

I’m gutted for him but I’ve had to stand back because I’m feeling the pressure and I need to be in a fit state for this weekend.

First thoughts, what sort of speed was he doing when selecting 1st, the jolt suggests he over revved it, so damage could well have been done, Rick

What year is it? Alot of vag diesel engines suffer with balnce shaft module faliure... this is what drives the oil pump! It usually gives similar symptoms!

Although i believe on the 1.4tdi the more common issue is oil pump chain snapping!!

Don’t know what speed he was doing he just says slowly.

It’s an 08 1.4tdi Polo.

He’s going to get rac out to tow it into a garage tomorrow so will have to wait and see. It doesn’t rain but it pours.

RAC have towed the Polo into a local garage. Fingers crossed the bill isn’t too big.

Bit of a Development with the polo yesterday. My son went up to the garage yesterday lunchtime as he’d spoken to them on the phone and wasn’t happy. Basically they’re saying he didn’t replace oil filter when he changed the oil, utter rubbish of course. Then they said they were going to change the oil and filter which will fix it. He’s basically told them to leave it alone and towed it home yesterday. The garage told him the oil filter is deformed due to the oil pressure.

Hopefully he’s going to take a look at the filter himself later but doesn’t expect this to be the problem.

This looks like another garage we have fallen out with as like him I’ve taken the 3litre Terrano there and each time “a previous repair hasn’t been done correctly “ and said in a patronising maner expecting it to be be that did the previous work. So looks like a tactic they play regularly but wont get away with it this time. Wish there was a garage that I didn’t feel that they want to rob you.

Thumbs down Sounds bad !

Sounds bad is it a belt driven camshaft then?
I suspect the jolt was something failing.
Will be interesting to hear what the problem is hope it's an easy cheap fix.
