Default Widgets

Can anyone tell me what Widgets are on my phone.

I am bored and can't sleep so playing with my phone. There's loads of Samsung and Play apps that I haven't got a clue what they do. Then when I was looking at apps it had a tab marked Widgets.

They are mainly just different versions of some of your apps.

widgets are apps that sit on your home screens. the clock for example, or weather app, those are widgets.

Ohh cheers Clivvy, hmm that seems like a recipe to slow my little Samsung down even further.

Does anyone use them or for that matter all the apps that Samsung insist you have such as chat on, flipboard, music hub and the rest.

I use 2 Samsung's, and they both come loaded with c##p you can't remove.........

I have not noticed an appreciable slowing down, as you cannot tell anyway......I keep a 16gb card in each with my music ( I don't own an iPod), they work just fine. Put Android assistant set to aggressive on it, a battery monitor, and avast free on it.....

Mines really slow, removed apps such Farcebook and messenger and few others but still slow. Slow as in 3 or 4 seconds before i can dial a number as an example. I Factory reset it earlier this year but hasnt really made much difference.
I got AVG on mine, its just done an update on AVG and now seems to come up with silly adverts associated with AVG.

Whats Android Assistant?

I hate AVG, slowed all my machines nearly to a standstill, and I fear could be the real reason for your slow machine. Mine is loaded, and I have just experimented, and can start up a call from scratch immediately (S3 + S3mini) Android assistant is an automatic cleaner of ram and space, very useful.

ideally you should root the phone, then you can remove all the Samsung crap apps and speed it up a bit OR root it and put a custom firmware on, that will improve things no end.

What Samsung is it?>

Galaxy S3

Not sure if I can do much with it until contract is up in a few months. It has somekind of insurance that needs some tracking software enabled.

Wouldnt have a clue how to root it, I've heard of it tho. To be honest the phone is pants so not sure it would be worth doing much with. At the end of contract I might flog it and get an iphone with a sim only deal.

well, the S3 is very well supported and you can get a CyanogenMod firmware on there which will be infinitely better. I think version 11 is available so that's kit kat 4.4.4, but there is a beta for Lollipop as well though BETAS are really more for people who are technical and understand it might not be 100%.

yes, as soon as you root it you invalidate the warranty, even more so when you install a custom firmware.

here is a how to - for gods sake don't attempt it if you aren't a little confident in repairing phones! I've never ever had an issue, but its a standard disclaimer in the modding world so be warned!

Flippin heck he goes on a bit doesn't he. Not sure I really followed what he was doing. For the sake of 5 months warranty I'd be tempted if I really knew the phone would be better but I'm yet to be convinced. Think it's probably the phone that's junk to be honest.
