The way i was taught years ago if you fail/stall a steep hill, foot brake on handbrake on.select reverse, engine off, then release the handbrake then slowley the foot brake, the motor should hold itself in gear, then turn the starter to a nice control decent.

The first one is the reason for my power mods. Big steep hills suck up awesome amounts of power and those stock pajeros wont have it. So the result more and more lunatic speed. Result no control when your truck takes off over a little tussock
Mine will go up that relatively slowly and so managable, but then I've got about 170 BHP and 35" mud tyres

I think a standard Paj/shogun comes in at under a hundred horse power so even a standard T2 TDI has a lot more grunt that that, especially when you consider that a T2 is also lighter

could this also be a case of just selecting the wrong gear for the climb

It could be wrong gear but usually it's power shortage on steep climbs. That's why the arabs do their monster Patrol rigs up sand dunes, showing off how much power they can muster.
