robert, robert who the hell is robert, kin hell jace tha knows my name from fb....
anyway Karin my 2000 x reg y61 3.0tdi zd has just had rebuild, head gasket failure revealed one slight crack in a piston, then 2 more surfaces. so 4 new ones fitted. superb motor, on a good day, lets face it not going to get much else in a troll if dont want 6 cylinder 2.8. i'm off j.30/31 M1 if can assist, more your arm chair mechanic but been in nissan 4x4s 6 years, got a fair idea, could probably russle up a spanner monkey lol in area too. richard (was rbrt, never robert!)

This might be a bit of a big favour to ask the seller, but he could try the diagonostics mode on the car with the paper clip shorting two pins on the OBD connector? This might flash up an error

Were you just unlucky with yours? When I towed with the old Patrol it horsed along the flat no problem, but it did die quite badly on hills - so this time I would quite like something with a bit of go. One of the 3L Y61s put out 363 n/m @ 1800 rpm (I think) and the other 323 n/m @ 2000 rpm - both of which is way more than the old Troll had and should see me whizzing up hills in Wales. |

I suppose the decision is: go for an old Troll which is uber reliable and almost impossible to kill, but which is cumbersome, juicy and dies on hills or go for the spanky sparkly 3L turbo charged intercooled machine, fly up hills, and take a chance on the reliability/longevity issue.
If I do find something the other end of the country it would be nice if someone close by could have a look - not a full inspection obviously, but to get an impression of whether it's been thrashed and abused and horrible or a reasonable car. I drove to Stoke on Trent to look at a Daihatsu Fourtrak that the seller described as "mint" (I used to have one and loved it). Ye Gods, if that was "mint" I'd like to see "comprehensively and utterly sh*gged in almost every respect"! |

Yopu got it in one, but do some research...the 3.0 engine was well sorted by the time it got into the Terrano around 2003, but as as been said, prior to that in the Troll it had a propensity to "do a Navara"...... I guess if you're used to towing a caravan around then you might find the Troll a bit small but ifg you look at prices, you'll find a late 3.0 T2 ticks all the boxes and is much more manageable and cost effective..... |

I tow some very large caravans with a 2.t TDI T2, no problems, in fact you couldn't legally tow anything bigger, so why use all the extra fuel

the zd i love it, but kinda wish it was a simplier 4.2 6cyl td.....
it didnt let me down, in fact we did a 600 plus mile tug of 1700 kg caravan to and from south wales via mid wales and m5. poor thing was overheating on m5 back but didnt fail us. had demisters on max heat and windows on vent to try to draw excess heat off motor. my terrano was a great tug but the troll is superb. as i said there isnt really a lot of choice in motor department unless go for the 4.8 petrol import, yum, with lpg or another member mentioned if his zd went pop would look at shoe horning the GM V8 TD all 6.2 or 6.5 litres of it drool. its amazing what the zd puts out for its capacity guess like modern cars its an evolved motor, not some lump from the stone age.
