Air intake protection

Noticed on mine (MK4 T2) that water can easily get past the indicator in the wing when fording which would end up at the air intake opening

unlike the earlier MK1&2's which had the wing coming around to the headlights

Yes I know a snorkel is the best answer but I don't have the funds for one yet & TBH not sure if i've got the guts to cut into a good wing just yet

so has anyone made up a sort of blank to stop water going straight into the intake or add a rear facing pipe to it
