speedo readings

Does anybody know how far out the speedo reads
My reason for asking is i got a speeding ticket in the post today saying i was clocked doing 47 in 40 zone saw the van at the time and thought i was in a 50zone so i would have been doing just under 50 can remember telling the kids to smile for the camera
Just suprised its come in at 47mph when i thought the speedos read quite a bit out
