Just as Zippy says.

You are only supposed to use 4WD in slippery conditions; if you engage it on dry tarmac and try a tight forward or reverse turn you'll feel the transmission wind up and the tyres scrubbing - its very obvious compared to 2WD. If it does that then 4WD is OK. To disengage you just put lever back to 2WD and on that MkII just reverse a few metres in a straight line and the little green light on the dash goes out.
