Re Propane burns cooler, We'll probably go back to Butane for that reason in the spring. We have 2 bottles of each, only 2 on the boat at a time, only need to change the regulator.

Both Propane and butane are heavier than air, and in deed the gas bottles are stored in a locker with a hole in the bottom, to let any gas out, but the locker is above the water line.

Gas on a boat in the middle of a lake or broad, or in a canal tunnel, you can't just nip out of the door and walk across the field, so this is the main reason that Boats are inspected with a Boat safety certificate every 4 years like an MOT but dearer.
As well as gas leakage, there is also flow rates when all appliances are on, fixed ventilation, wiring, fuses, inspections of pipework, cables, fire extinguishers, escape route other than the cabin door,
The biggest risk after gas is petrol and again the lockers have to vent over board. There is also a risk with batteries, and they have to be secured and have the vent pipe venting as well.
Most inspectors like to see if the butane can boil a kettle and make a cup of tea,
The biggest cause of casualties on a boat is some idiot refuelling petrol in a lock, and the fumes find their way to the pilot light on the water heater....
