Default Missed this new 'Stealth Tax' - did you?

Must have been outside having a barbie when this hit the news last June:-

"50p month 'tax' on all hard wired phone connections"

see http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8102756.stm

Lord Carter talks about a 'contribution' which implies a voluntary element but the publication mentions a 'levy' which is, in my view, something entirely different. It is not a huge amount of money six quid a year (for EACH line) but that's the 'tax rate' now. It seems to be just another of the Brown government's 'Stealth Taxes'.

Not stealth it's just not been reported well enough in the media. That's not saying it's a day light robbery tho

Apparently it's to pay for providing better Broadband Connections to rural areas Excuse me but if you move or live somewhere where they have limited or no connectivity is it not your choice and why should the rest of us pay for it I'm sure there are areas without other services such as Gas or a bit rarer Electricity or Sewage piping.

Don't blame just golden brown as other parties and leaders are available who will no doubt help to rip the shirt of our backs to pay for others mistakes. I'm gonna buy a remote island and claim independance

Jim T

PS forgot to say don't forget expense claims too, it's all gotta be paid for

hold on, aren't all these companies private (or privatized)?

so shouldn'd improved services be payed for at the exspense of shareholders dividends?

what next, 50p a month for new shopping trolly's at Tesco's?

or how about £1 a month for new furniture in the bank manger's office?

sorry i forgot we are all ready doing the second one aren't we, and it's much more than £1 a month!

Hi Lacroupade

Yes they snuck that one in on us. We do have a French TV but it's not worth watching!

I'd rather the tax went on mains drainage for you guys living in the sticks, then you wouldn't have to sit on that potty!

No gas or sewer here either
The bucket n chuck it has been superceded now by a rather trendy hole in the ground
Broadband is here though you do have to pull the string very tight to watch video

Bunch of ******* ******* ******* *****.

I work hard (most of the time ) earnt he dosh and pay god knows what for a decent internet connection. Now theyre going to tax me further spending the money I've already paid tax on earning and Vat on spending it

I read somewhere that theyre about to spend umpteen million making sure "poor people" have lap tops and internet access at home.

Presumably this'll be what pays for it

Are they going to tax the mega rich more so I have access to an Aston Martin DB7 too ?

Sticks in ya throat a little when you have to set up a nice laptop with a broadband dongle and hand it over to the "deserving". Hey you never know it may allow people to turn their lives around and become good citizens

Still I'm sure it'll bring trade to the local car boot that'll help the economy

Yeah I think I'm gonna declare myself officially poor cos it seems that if you sit on your arse in this country for long enough you suddenly turn into a 'deserving cause'....

I mean if you work for a living and struggle to pay your bills but fail by the tiniest margin you get bankrupted and pilloried, whereas if you are just a lounger you get a roof over your head, beer money every week and now a free laptop - like thats gonna change your life....
