Default Merseyside, new to terrano, not to laning

hi all,
Just got a terrano, interesting car, different to my ancient rangie V8.... fuel costs about the same tho

I'm a member of CRAG and have been for a few years so not new to the laning scene. Occasionally to be found in the highways and byways of north wales so if any of you are out and about, say hi....

New to the terrano tho, seems a good machine, any hints on tyres etc very welcome.
Getting quotes for the insurance, figures are really high, any suggestions?

Try NFU.

They cover mine complete with mods and cover for 4x4 Response work, full business cover etc an its a lot cheaper than Adrian Flux and Sureterm wanted on limited mileage SDP policies.

Must admit though when I hear some of my mates who have Landies insurance premiums these Japs are expensive to insure.

As for other tips.

Change oil in rear LSD - should be 80w/90 API GL5 LSD oil - often gets wrong stuff put in.

Grease steering stops, or you'll ne on in a few days asking what the noise is - everyone else does.

Re-insurance. I don't have any mods or anything on mine but I went with the AA. Took out insurance with them and seperate breakdown cover (with discount factored in) so fully comp with breakdown cover and home start (I'm a mechanical numpty don't forget.. ) I'm paying £339 per year. Previously for Peugeot 306 1.4 fully comp with breakdown cover (Green Flag) I was paying £434..! Work that one out.?

I got my insuranced through confused.com ended up with autotrader ins.
Even with my er distinguished record and declared mods it's £264 fully comp, work that one out
No legal cover cause it's crap, but got it with RAC anyway
Parked anywhere, and includes work etc

Thanks for the heads up on the lsd oil, I'll check that today, as for insurance, about the best has been swift cover, £350.00
Everyone else is around the £5-800 mark........... big shock when you're used to a rangie classic costing less than £200.................

I'm not planning on adding much to the car, maybe a portable 12v winch which can fit on either front or rear, might lift it a little, but the first is a decent set of tyres, What's the biggest tyre which can be fitted as standard? I'm going to be doing road miles mainly and this is my daily ride, so AT's have to be the order of the day. Is there a boot cover as well, I've the 7 seater, version?

It'll also form a testbed for a hydrogen system I'm developing as well.
My profession is electronics so if anyone wants help on adding electronics or electrical systems, let me know and I'll do my best to help.

tell me more about the portable winch there..
there are lots of info about tyres, just do a search, and maybe ask Extreme4x4 he some times has a set to sell..

load cover.. yep a few on ebay some time, just keep an eye open for one.

ocelot - 31s are the biggest you'll get on without starting to mess about.

If you're interested in a lift later on PM me I think You'll find my lift springs the best value around and I'm pretty sure the only ones actually specced by someone who uses a T2 themselves.

Might be worth checking the front ride height too, they sag with age. Straight measurements off panels are a bit inprecise, best be is to follow the procedure in the Nisssan manual - HERE its fairly straightforward to do and best of all free to adjust.

as terra says really
31" tyres fit nice
terras springs are very good

remove the rear arb but not the front... keeps road holding but the mutz off road.
someone here does a front tow bar , if your going portable winch. i have a nice one im very happy with
superwinch x3 on portable mount. works great on the back

Cheers for the info, 31" is what I'll go for, mostly on road so AT's are the order of the day I think!

Guess I'll need to have a think about fitting a mount for a portable winch, cables not an issue, nice and easy on this car

Thanks for the info on resetting the ride height on the front, really useful, I'll get down to that tomorrow, theres a nasty clunk when I drop off a curb, coming from the right hand side, must be a bush or something.......
Just out of interest, theres a limited slip in the rear diff, is there one in the front axle? The car is very soft on the suspension, compared to my last car anyway, I guess new springs would stiffen it a little?

The hydrogen system is something I'm playing around with at the moment, basically its an 'on-demand' hydrogen generator using 12vdc which adds to the air intake, I've tried it on other diesel engines and it works ok, doesn't work well on petrol tho, injection systems anyway. Initial figures indicate 30% saving on fuel but this is just from a basic set of mileage/fuel purchase numbers, much more work needed before I can say with any certainty.

I'm very new to the nissan, I like it tho, didn't pay a lot for it and it goes nicely......
