Red face New kid on block seeks help!

Hi there folks! - so I happen across this forum after weeks of virtual searching for suitable Terrano + one week of actual viewing 5 vehicles so far.
I really need a swb for work (Landscape) - towing - that also looks ok for personal use.
I saw a 95 swb diesel manual yesterday looked immac. with a probably genuine 70,000 on the clock. Only thing is no intercooler bfore June 2006.
I suspect the intercooler makes quite a difference? I would probably have bought it but for that, apart from, when the dealer started the engine from cold there was dirty (blackish) smoke for about 5 secs - then 100% clean - is that usual/norealproblem?
I have put in a lot of footwork to try to find the right vehicle (London/N.Kent) without success yet. Manual is prob. best because of need to tow/+ reversing trailer. The japanese imports (Mistral etc) appear to be all automatic LWB. - is there a problem getting spares/parts for those?
Any advice really welcome at this point. I shall definately be purchasing asap.

Hi There and welcome aboard. Well the TD and TDI are 100BHP and 125BHP in that order. I have the TDI LWB and it seems to go very well. As far as I know a bit of black smoke from cold is fine and I pretty sure most diesels do that. In some ways the older non intercooled are better as they're not as electronic, not that the TDI is unreliable just simpler to fix should anything go wrong if you know what I mean. I drove a friends Mistral and it was fine infact it was a good drive, most of the bits are the same as ours too. When I was looking for another motor I found the SWB's to be lower miles for some reason and if it wasn't for family then a SWB would have been better. One of the most common problems is cars that have not been in 4wd, the auto hubs and running gear need a little excersize. As a result the auto hubs tend to give a few problems but nothing difficult to fix, at worst stick a couple of manual hubs on for £60 each.

Thanks for that info - I have just spotted a 95 Ford Maverick for sale nearby - are they identical for parts? I've been told they are. The 98LWB mentioned in other reply looks an absolute snip but to far away. I'm going to look at the maverick tommorrow - no intercooler, but purple car!!

thats just it...... the key thing is the lack of intercooler.....

if you can afford one with intercooler get it ....or you will regret it
