I find one of the skills at towing lareg heavy trailers is to not worry about going at any given speed, dont try to go to fast and on steep inclines find where the engine feels comfortable. Dont keep reving until you need to change up, then the engine dies and you have to change down again and the rev to high, change up etc etc.
just find where it sounds and feels comfortable nad if it is a little slower than you expected, just accept it and plod along |

good sentiment plank, I find t2 had speeds it happy at in a given gear and revs.
on old lighter van was around 2500 which in 5th gave about 65-66 on speedo which with speedo error meant a real 60!. trip out with heavier van generally felt about same, good nose weight no stabiliser either, though had blade in locker in case reckon have to try without first otherwise masking bad behaviour...all was ok except on way back had a genny borrowed sat behind rear axle, mind was windier too but still ok. found dropped a cog in plenty of time and still dragged over 3 tonne of outfit up a long m'way bank in 4 th, then once over summit regained 60mph!

I used to ensure on the motorway in 5th I kept the revs to 2500rpm.... used to equal out at around the 62pmh mark. In fact I tend to tow using the rev counter rather then the speedo.
Long uphill drags wait for the revs to drop to about 2000rpm, then change down... changing up normally at about 3000rpm |

Hi All
On the local weighbridge my '96 T2 LWB comes in at 1940 kg, with half a tank and no driver. 80% towed weight is therefore around +/- 1550 kg. With my Hobby 560 at 1600 kg fully loaded, the T2 handles it adequately, although not sparkling performance, it has yet to disappoint me. Regards CL. |

You shouldn't have any problems at all with that and when your on that boggy cl you'll not have to wait for Farmer Giles and his tractor Ours clocks in between 1378kg "empty" & 1589kg "full" (although I suspect we dont go to fully laden very often) and whilst it would be silly to say you don't notice its there its certainly a decent match under a variety of towing conditions. I find myself agreeing with plank, just tow so it feels comfy if that's 60 so be it if its 50 there you go, have fun! |
