ok

i want to make something like this

so i need a 12 v waterproof strip light

i want to run it off the 12 v socket used for towing my towing electrics

also i want to make a 5- 10 metre extension lead to run rower to it

my question is can i buy a fitting that will take 12v florescent tubes
where ?

also if a want to run a lead off my towing electrics what should i use

basicly when stuck at the weekend it was bloody dark and hard to see around you. id like to light the area around me but not blinding light like torches or car lights.

would be good for fixing the truck in the event of breakdown too

any ideas or advice would be excellent

oh and if you see potential in my idea and want to take it further. i want 10 percent for the idea

Just buy something like this

You'll struggle to find a 12v floursecent light that is water tight and by the time you've finished the above will be cheaper. It comes with a mains and a car charger - would be fairly straighforwrd to rig it to run from towing electrics but easier to just use cig lighter.

thats the idea... but its 240v with a 12v battery supply

i want just 12 supply that way i have unlimited power supply from alternator and no batteries to wear out or not work

Its also got a 12v DC car charger to keep it topped up.

yeah but i dont want battery of any kind, the always wear out or dont charge anymore . i can get strip lights from argos that run off batteries .

then you throw them away cos they break

Thats what I'm tryin to say - you don't have to use the battery just keep it plugged in to the car when using - just needs a longer lead making.

too bright. and directional .causing shadows etc

you just end up talking to people who turn out to be shadows or you get whipped in the face with a branch cos you cant see, either too dark or too bright.

id like to be able to run an extension lead like a proper wind up extension lead off the towing electrics say 5-10 metres

into this id like
a 2-3 foot 12v strip light for lighting the area
also to plug into the extension lead a small 12v spot light for a work light

i think this would make a good bit of kit for recovery, camping, overland events

another thing you could do is plug an amber beacon into it and have it 5-10 metres away from the rear of your vehicle... for when you break down on a motorway or in a dangerous situation

i think a 12v extension lead running of the back of your truck would be a fantastic bit of kit

anyone else got any ideas ?

ok so is

a 240v 13a cable good enough to run 12v 13a

what and where would i need to fuse it so as not to wreck the battery if something breaks or gets wet ?

i think could do the plugs from a caravan shop and the light from electrics supplier.

what is the max power i could take from the towing electrics what wires have the best output

or could i run a new feed direct from the battery to a second socket on the back of the truck to run this from... this would be good so i wont need my truck running while im working. or damage my truck electrics.if overloaded

i think with 12v, running over 5m to 10m youd het to much power drop, so the light be a lot dimmer or not even work..

might be better off with this ..

You'd be better using a grey socket rather than a normal black socket and wiring the light to use the attery charging circuit on the plug that way you can plug into anyone who has the second grey socket. Normal black sockets don't have any circuits spare and those in use aren't very high powered.

Mains cable is fine for 12v.

Never seen anything longer than 12" in 12v flourescents though. By the time you've finished you'd be able to but 3 of those lights I've linked to.

oops, now. didnt mean that at all. I ment like the battry bosters, so the power and lights are together, no need for a long lead in the dark for some one to fall over.
