Wasps Nest Advice

Right guys, I’ve just noticed several small wasps coming and going from behind the white plastic trim between flat roof and top of my back door. There’s about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch gap between stone and plastic all the way along.

Any ideas what I can do please.

Jim,

Problem is they will have built their nest probably between the joists in the flat roof.

You could try a 'puffer' type powder dispenser,

You will need to wear a mask and goggles as you are using it above shoulder level, and be VERY prepared for a rapid exit......

You need to observe their route in, and wait until evening when they return to the nest at dusk, 'puff' them as they go in, as they will all follow the same route in, give that a good blast.

The active ingredient contaminates the whole nest by physical transfer, but RUN inside, as soon as you have done it, close all windows etc.

They emit an attack pheremone, which kicks them all off.....

As John say's powder puff them and all along the entrance route, but be aware they turn nasty very quickly once they are attacked, I have just dealt with two such nests but both were more accessible than yours, make sure there are no small holes/gaps into your home from the flat roof area, as they will have your scent and come after you if they can, Rick

Wasps must be a bit of a regional thing as where I live & work, I've only seen the odd one.
We've had our fair share in the past & I used to love peeing down their holes when I took my dog a walk

That sounds pretty risky to me, deffo not some thing I would be doing, having said that all the nests I have encountered have been high up so peeing on them would not be an option, Rick

Back along, when I was in Devon, we were putting a footpath through a hedgebank.

Me in the digger, my assistant as banksman......short a long tale...I hit a wasp nest, he got stung 18 times, off to A&E, 3 days off, now permanently sensitized to wasp stings and has to carry an epipen.....

Well a friend of mine that has a gardening business came round with a can of spray foam stuff. Waited till dusk and sprayed a section about 12 inch long. Will wait and see what tomorrow brings.

Last thing I’d want to do is get sensitive parts of my anatomy out a few feet away from angry wasps.

Well guys, a mate of mine tried with a can of foam spray insecticide which reduced the number but they were still there. Just had a bloke out that works for same organisation as me with a pressurised lance and powder.

Getting there then.....not an easy location to deal with...the pressurised lancythingybob, will certainly help get the stuff up there

Last time I dealt with a Wasps Nest was at my Mums about 10 years ago she had two nests in her garage flat roof.

Not much help if you live in the UK but when I go to Majorca I always bring back a couple of cans of Zum. Its an insect spray that kills Ants, Wasps all sorts of creepy crawlers - it lasts a good 6 months.

I sprayed all the entrances and visible parts of the Nest with ZUM and within a day there was no more activity. I left it a couple of days with repeated blasts of ZUM then carefully dug into the nest with a scraper and removed it.

I spray the perimeter of our house on the damp course in spring, the result is a very low level of insects in our home.

We had Ants for years in our lounge - they seemed to live in the Chimney. One treatment of ZUM - a 10 year problem solved.

I guess in the UK whatever the active ingredient is it may be restricted for commercial use only by the likes of Rentokill.
