What tyres to fit ?

Had the Jeep serviced today and new front brake pads fitted.
Asked for a Health Check on the vehicle and to his credit my mate found the n/s/f tyre (the one that tends to nudge any kerb edges!) had a cut on the outside edge and when you pulled back the flap there was some cord exposed.

The existing tyres are Goodyear Wrangler HP 235/65 R17 104 V rated all round. All four were new when I bough the truck and have done 30k miles so still have some life left in them. The spare is just legal so plan to fit 2 new tyres and put the worst of the existing tyres to the spare.

An observation was made that the Goodyear's have quite a soft sidewall and probably hence the damage so am now unsure whether to fit another pair of the same or go for something else. We also noted that the n/s/f tyre was quite perished whereas the others all seemed quite good. The date on the tyres is 2014.

I like the Michelin Cross Climates but they are £30 a cover more so am looking for suggestions. I want to avoid budget brands.

Does it have permanent 4 wheel drive? If so I have heard it is best to replace four at a time and all same type to provide the same amount of grip. This supposed to prevent damage to the drivetrain

Lots of a/t tyres have strengthened sidewalls, the latest bfg a/t's are suposed to be very very tough, and I think cooper tires have something armorguard, banshee will know he runs coopers.

Yes it is permanent 4 WD with distribution I think 70% rear 3-% front and when wheel slip is detected it changes as required.

I too have always changed all 4 tyres in the past.

We have just had all four replaced on the project truck as the tyres it came with were end of life, they were Avon Rangers which annoyed me as they had a rotation direction which means you can't put one on from the other side. Anyway we had Goodyear Wranglers fitted and they've changed the handling of the truck totally and seems quieter inside the truck. Try looking at Black Circles and also Kwik Fit online, Kwik Fits online prices are far cheaper than just going into their branches. Think it came out at £326 for all four tyres and a £20 Love to shop voucher as a freebie. I thought that wasn't a bad deal even though I'm not a fan of Kwik Fit.

Banshees running STTs (cooper's mud tyre) and I had them on my Y61. Great tyre in my opinion and will probably be what I put on Bess when the BFG muds wear out (nothing against the BFGs, I just don't think the muds are worth the premium and they're also slightly smaller than the same size coopers).

Both have reinforced sidewalls and the coopers stood up to some abuse on rocks etc without issue. I've heard BFG ATs are the same and I think coopers ATs (there's a few different types) are also the same.

I would say avoid general tyres ATs as I managed to badly cut a sidewall on my first ever Wales (and greenlaning) trip with the Y61

If you're strictly on roaders' then go for a highway terrain tyre.
otherwise its either BFG AT's or some thing else....

The BFG AT's look mean. Today when I was out with a mate I noticed the tyres on his VW 4x4 were really mean looking. They were Dunlop SP Sports with an asymetric tread. They don't do them in my size --drat.

It used to be better than that but they have "updated" it to more of a sales thing now, before it would just give recommendations then the option to find a fitter.

They look the part don't they, some good alternatives on here as well as reviews, just press the alternative tyres button. http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Ge...Grabber-GT.htm I have used Hankook loads in the past and so as my Dad, as a brand I highly recommend them but I have never had the ones that this site lists on it's alternatives list, they score well though and look bloody ace

Got a good price from CostCo for Goodyears @ £97.18 each. Will fit a pair of new ones on the rear axle.

It's a shame they do not do the Dunlop SP Sport in my size as they look great and I have always liked asymetricals from the days of Michelin XAS.

This way I have matching tyres all round without buying 4.

My experience with CostCo tyres has been weird and I have purchased about 28 covers from them in the last 13 or so years that's been mainly Michelin's for myself & brother.

1) They will only put new tyres on the rear axle irrespective of your wishes or where the driven wheels are or how new the other tyres might be.

2) They use only Nitrogen gas for inflation and put the green cap on your valve.

3) I have never had any issues with Rim Seal, leaking valves or over tightened wheel nuts.

4) I was minded to put Michelins on my Jeep firstly just a pair and then in six months time replace the other pair. They refused to mix makes an an AWD vehicle stating company policy. That's why I ended up having Goodyears again on the Jeep. I would have spent around £120 more if they had agreed to my mix.

5) It is only recently that they have done puncture repairs.

6) Although the staff have changed over the last 13 years the service has never been particularly customer friendly in my view. Company policy seems to be a standard reply to most questions. It feels like Robotic Training unlike the main store that is brilliant in customer service.

7) They would not reserve a pair of tyres they had in stock for my brothers car even though I offered to pay over the phone! It's as though they are not on a bonus scheme so are not interested in selling tyres!!

8) They only seem to sell Michelin, Goodyear and one other brand so choice is limited. Not the cheapest except when they have a promotion in place like 4 for the price of 3.
