Well hopefully I'm due some good karma my way now.me and the missus grabbed a bite to eat and went for a mini cruise, whilst driving on a40 the hillingdon turnoff we saw a poor guy trying to push his little vauxhall combo onto the grassy verge as it had broken down. So we turned around at the next junction and did a double back, pulled infront of him (on the side of this busy dual carriageway

He explained the van just stopped whilst he was driving it, so I got the old standard tow rope out the back hitched him on and slowly pulled him to a safe turnoff.

Then came the next stage, we were gonna leave him to it, but he had no recovery, had been driving a year, didn't know how to check oil or coolant and his phone was dead..

So we rang his family on my phone, whilst I got a postcode of a local neighbour and street name. They said they would be an hour, so we checked oil and coolant... There was none

I checked for white creamyness on oil cap and coolant chamber, all looked ok. So we then drove him to a petrol station, topped up with a big 5w30 and coolant bottle, filled her up, she took a lot of oil til it hit the stick... About 3 litres to top of stick. After fluids adjusted we tried cranking it, it was so close to starting but battery went a little weak, so we whipped out the jump leads... Gave her a good going but alas, no joy whilst cranking it looked like it was coughing black smoke (although now getting dark) at which point the family turned up in their land rover and hitched up ready for the drive to reading

Some people need to help themselves though and just learn a little bit of practical car maintenance, I'm sure it's a driving test requirement to know how to check the oil as I was tested on it outside the test centre many moons ago

it depends on what the examiner asks, he could have asked you to show him how to check the coolant level instead, maybe now alex has shown him he has learned something, we all have to start somewhere, well done alex

Yeah it is nice

Not often I get to help someone less technical minded than myself, minus at my work obviously. I guess it was partially his attitude too, such a friendly guy and so grateful

I once stopped to help a guy, next to a car park, there was a puddle of oil under the car, he actually asked if I knew anywhere that sold plastic padding...
I said what for... he said that thing there is leaking...

It was the oil filter, it was that old, it had rusted through, and he was actually going to patch it.

I sent him to a car accessory place, take the details of your car and I said the cheapest option is to buy a new filter... half an hour later he was sorted.

I don't think he needed an oil change, as he had been topping up the leak for weeks...

Well Alex, lucky you got away before you ended up towing the LR and combo back to Reading
Glad you knew how to check the oil, your getting there mate

I made sure both my kids know how to check the oil/water and what to look for under the bonnet, as they were learning to drive and still ask if they have checked the fluids on the car.

I like to help people and have towed/helped many over the years. I once towed a London Taxi about 15 miles to his house, he had broken down near to my house an was on his way home, he had just finished a long shift and had been told by recovery, that he had to wait about an hour, he gave me £30 quid....which I kept refusing, but he insisted.

Give her the Terrano piece by piece, start with the rear bumper, lol, if she cherishes that, then you can move on to other parts...
